MG MG Y Type - Steel wheels

Some one wrote me recently - I cannot remember who though - about the need for 3 new wheels. Well there are 8 on eBay at http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260025881014&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:UK:1 If you contact the seller they might split them for you into 3 and 5 since 5 would sort out a complete set for a car and be cheaper for you on shipment.

Good Luck

If I was in the UK I would pick up those wheels. I had for years a bad vibration between about 40-60 MPH. The vibration was there coasting down a long hill at that speed so that eliminated the engine, Had the drive shaft balanced with little or no improvement, same with the wheels. Finally took it to a truck repair shop who could balance the wheels on the car. Turned out the wheels had "run out" ie they were bent out of round. The shop could straighten them. It was the single best repair I have ever done.
The rims are soft steel easily bent by ham fisted tyre repair shops using machines to remove them.
At the price these wheels are starting at surely the spares bunch of the Y register should try to pick them up. They are are most likely to suffer from run out but that can be fixed in most cases. I had one which I use for a spare which was so bad that it should not be on the car. So I would like one. At the price they are going for I would be preared to put up the money. Terry

I concur with Terry. One of my spare wheels had a huge run out on it. I took the worst of it out myself and then my local tire store did the rest.

Well worth someone getting a hold of them.

Do we have a member near there? I am almost tempted to save them myself but I have a YB! I don't mind bidding though if someone will pick them up and store them - this also raises the point of survival of spares people don't want or wish to donate rather than throw away - is there no MGCC facility for storing old spares for MGs?

For any one looking for 16" wheels, I have the address of a Swiss clubmate who would give 4 of them very cheaply (also threatening to throw them on a scrap heap, as he lacks space). Please contact me directly.

There was no rush for them...

Hi Remo,

I still want them now I've got the space to store them and I'm going to put some effort in it to see if I can arrange transport.

Can you mail me for the adress; I threw it out last year thinking the wheels were lost for good....

As soon as I get to my MG folder (paper!!!!) after the weekend. I think you will have to collect the wheels near Zürich.
Remo Peter

I phoned the guy: said he gave them for free to someone, but that someone now does not answer the phone. I'll keep trying...Anyway he said they were not original Y wheels, but 16" from another car (early VW beetle ?) with adaptors (?????) to fit the Y hubs. And the tyres were larger than 5.25". I think we will need a photo.
Remo Peter

That's interesting! But for me only the original wheels would be worth the trouble.

So thanks, but no thanks.
