MG MG Y Type - Steering column slip ring unit

My YA is missing its steering column slip ring unit and seeing as I've just spent the last couple of days repairing that bl***y clockwork steering wheel indicator switch, it would be nice to be able to use it! Anyway, until I find a spare slip ring unit at an autojumble etc. (which I believe may take me a long time) I thought I would try and make something up that would do the same job. I have the original rings, but not the stationary contacts. So, any suggestions? how do the contacts work on the original? are they sprung loaded? and how do they fit inside the tube that bolts onto the steering column? Or does anyone have a spare one anyway?
Many Thanks.

IF I understand your description correctly the "spring" contacts are curved strips of spring brass with a contact at the end that rides on the "stationary" section on the steering shaft. It has been many years since I have had my assembly apart. Do you have the parts manual? I think that there is a picture of the various pieces in that publication.

Hope this helps

The excellent publication Y Sheet 1 Steering Column Electrics will answer all your questions - available from Regalia at www.mgytypes.org.

Help, I can't find it on ebay. can anyone point me in the right direction? or am I too late?
Anyway, thankyou all for all the help advice and photos. The few remains of the slip ring unit I have actually make some sense now!
I'll be sending a photo of my Y to Y's on parade shortly.

James:
Appears to be plenty of time left on the ebay item and the numbers are very reasonable (up tp now - beware the snipers). Poking around in the boot of my YB, found portions of a spare column, however, if you can secure one on that side of the pond, it certainly would be better.
