MG MG Y Type - steering column sliprings

I can't find how to post a wanted request on this site so I hope I will be excused for asking if anyone has a slipring assembly for a YB for sale. Mine is broken and I don't know how long the glue will last once we are using our cars again.

Ian,

I have a spare steering column with the slip ring asembly in place, but I am not sure if it would be the same as a YB. I do believe it is a YT column.

Maybe you know someone who would know if they are compatible.

Sorry CR. I have only just noticed your post having given up on a reply. Personally I wouldn't know if the YT is the same as the YB in this area.
I would, however, be wary of sending anything to this country at the present time as we are hearing all sorts of scare stories about taxes and duties being randomly applied in the wake of our historic act of self harm in leaving the EU.

Thanks for your reply though.

To my knowledge, the YT did not have a slipping at all - just like the T-Types of the time. Drivers used hand signals when turning corners....

All,

The Slipring assembly is common across Y/YT and YB.

The Y/T (excepting EX(U) models only used the Horn and ground/earth wire connections, but all connections were there.

I too have a spare set.

As to taxes and duty and self-harm comment Ian, it has always been that way on importing second hand goods from the UK, and is the same now (and was pre-Brexit)if I buy anything from the UK (or any country and even US state) and import it here it gets snagged for import duty and Washington State Sales Tax and US Import duties based on the Customs Declared Value. The Customs Declared Value will also be the value for insurance purposes and insurance value can no longer be a higher value. These have all been standardized factors of international shipping for ages as I regularly import stuff to my UK residence to my self from the US and also bring stuff from the UK to my US residence. Be reassured this has nothing to do with Brexit and has everything to do with governments becoming increasingly desperate to get their grubby hands on your money as they continue to spend more of your money than they earn/steal in taxes. Sorry - just facts.

Any way, with all that. If you are interested Ian, I can get you some pictures and if you are interested, I am sure we can figure out a way to get one to you.

Who knows, you may be successful finding what you need in the UK, now that we know the parts are the same in the YA/YB configurations.

- Parts are getting very scarce for these cars, and I think it is important to keep them on the road.... and driving!!

Thanks for all your kind offers but I the repaired one I have seems to be holding together so far. I will come back to you if it breaks in the hope that it is not too late by then.

Reactivating : today I had a near disaster. I have carefully built up the inner "finger" contacts, rewired everything, tested and all ok. The outer slipring casing, which famously becomes brittle through being exposed, had previously been epoxy repaired ... and today, in fitting the steering column and upper clamp, I failed to notice that the outer column had moved enough to disturb the finger alignment with the outer brass rings - one finger, newly restored, was bent and put pressure on the outer bakelite casing - breaking it again at the old broken spot. I couldn't believe it. Repeated the epoxy repair, waiting 24 hours before nervously testing, and trying to finish the steering column clamp.
SO - in case my repair attempt fails, is there by chance anyone here who has for sale an intact outer slipring casing? If the 4 terminal threads are intact, so much the better, but I can work around that if need be.
Thanks for any feedback.
John.

John,
Weather is not co-operating here for me to access the columns that have the slip rings on them. I will get some photos in the next week or so. and will try to remember to post them here.

Thank you CR - I appreciate you looking. If you flick over to the other current slipring thread (re. YTs), you'll see a portion of the damage on my outer casing. It may well survive for a while, thanks to epoxy filling ... but in the long run an undamaged outer would be ideal. Of course I have toyed with the idea of bypassing the slipring assembly altogether, running power straight from the steering wheel hub to the indicators and horn and simply doing manual (clockwork) on/off - but if I can preserve the slipring function, I would prefer to.
Yours,
John.

I will have to check my inventory but I believe I am running low.

What epoxy did you use? Try Areldite.
