MG MG Y Type - Storage of YT Side Curtains

Now that I have the top down on the '49 YT (see picture), I am trying to determine the proper storage method for the Side Curtains.

I have looked through the archives of the various MG internet sites and read the "One and a Quarter Litre Series "Y" Owner's Handbook, and other books, but I can find no information on proper stowage of the Side Curtains when they are not in use.

Just looking at the car one would suspect that they could be stowed behind the rear seat back. The two rear curtains fit well in that location, but the two front ones do not seem to fit. I know they do not fit well in the Boot, and even if they did they would not be well protected. Moreover, Boot stowage would render the boot useless for other purposes.

I feel certain there must be some instructions someplace that would cover this, I am just not finding the information. Any help would be welcomed.

Thank you in advance.

Phil

Yes they go in the sidescreen storage behind the rear seat. They are a tight fit.I used the instructions in the TD owners manual and if I remember correctly you fit the two front curtains first opposite one another, then you push in the rears. Anyway it works for me. Your car has a non original cover over the the top bows and topwhen folded. It looks smart but it may encroach on the sidescreen storage and I don't think there is room for that. Terry

Thnak you for your response.

I am familiar with the side screen storage you mentioned as I also own a MGTC and a MGTD, both of which have a storage box behind the rear "boot" area. My YT does not seem to have such a box, which was the reason I have put up the question.

I will look again but I did not see anything except a small space behind the seat. As for the cover, it does not actually drop down behind the seat. It is only about 12 inches wide so the edge of the cover is perhaps 3 inches below the back of the seat and it is just a loose piece of cloth where it hangs behind the seat. What MAY impinge on the side curtain stowage is the top itself. It folds and does drop behind the seat, but even when the top is not lowered behind the seat, the side curtains do not seem to fit. I can either put the front pair or the rear pair in there, but not both.

I will look again for a stowage box.

I had some time to revisit this issue today.

There is in fact no storage box in the back of the car, but there is JUST enough room to carefully fit the curtains behind the seat. Just as Terry suggested, you put the front curtains side by side aligned with the front of one against the rear of the other, the lower part of the curtains can be folded up against the window and acts as some protection for the window plastic. These must go in first and be put against the rear of the area behind the seat up against the boot wall. The rear curtains are also aligned flat against each other front to rear and they can then be CAREFULLY guided into the remaining space between the seat back and the front curtains. This must be done carefully as the space is very tight. Then the canvas portion of the top can be folded, rolled and placed inside on top of the side curtains.

After that I place my "non-standard" cover in place and I am good to go. I think I will try to make some covers to protect everything.
