MG MG Y Type - SU fuelpump questions

I'm about to change the points in my early SU (L-type?) fuelpump in my YA because it only works when asked friendly or persuaded with a mighty blow on the head!

I'm sure I will be able to change and adjust the points, but to prevent the points pitting again I've heard of fitting a (zener?)diode.

Can anybody please give me the right specification/series number for that diode, so that I don't make a complete fool of myself at the electronics-store? I converted my Y to negative earth.

AND can anybody explain how to fit the diode? Preferably with a picture!

Lastly, whilst researching this question I stumbled upon someone recommending a bidirectional TVS-diode (transient voltage surpressor) because it lasts longer when pumping air when you ran out of fuel. Apparently his 24V zenerdiode gave up very quick in this (rare) condition; anyone care to comment?

Hi Willem,
Try Burlen Fuel Systems here in England (www.burlen.co.uk). They are THE experts in all SU products, and can supply a vast range of new spare parts. They recently supplied me with a new set of points for my YA fuel pump, complete with a capacitor to minimise pitting of the points, and its all working perfectly. I believe they can supply a diode instead of the capacitor if preferred.
Alternatively, you may be interested in their electronic conversion kit which eliminates the points altogether. It fits under the existing cap so is invisible, and sells over here for about £40.
Hope this helps. (I have no connection with Burlen, other than as a very satisfied customer).

Contact Dave DuBois (ddubois at sinclair dot net) and ask him - he is very knowledgable on these things and also is able to supply excellent rebuilds and solid state fuel pumps at very reasonable costs. Dave has a TD so he knows what we need (I am working to get him on the same page arent I Dave?).

I might also add that Burlen are good too - just that you will have to pay VAT from Burlen as they are in the EU!

To be honest my first thought was to mail my question to Dave, but thought that his answer (on the TD-TF BBS) would be interesting for all of us! I will contact Dave tonight.

Hi Willem,

Please, tell me your address. I send the diode which is suitable for the 12VSU pump. The diode is being set on the SU pump of my YB as well. The diode is very effective against the deterioration of the contact point. I will send an easy electric drawing, too.
