MG MG Y Type - sun visors YA

Hi All
My sun visors have ben replaced somewhere in the car's glorious past with 3mm dark green acrylic probably desirable in the 60s and 70s.
Anyway i am going back to cloth covering as per head lining with board backing .
Now my question is simple what is the thickness of the board used . The drawing in the IMGYR gives it as 0.3ins which to me is around 5/16". Now that is to thick for the clamp part of the hinge because the screws wont reach through.
So should the board be 5/16" and i need to replace the screws with longer ones, (perhaps they were shortened to accommodate the delightful green acrylic?) or is the boarding really only 3mm or 1/8 " thick which seems a little thin maybe ?
I know its only a detail but if i am replacing them i want them correct. Any help gratefully received as always.

Thank you

Hi John,
some months ago we made our new sun visors. The old ones were from fibre board with glued on cloth sheets.
I made new 3mm-plywood boards and my wife covered them with a sewed cover -- more professional.

In case you need more info or photos, please ask.

Best regards
Walter

Hi John,
I have recently made new ones for my YA as the originals were warped and cracked and the cloth covering was tatty. They were made of hardboard about 1/4" thick (I've since thrown them away) but I used 5.5mm plywood which was the nearest equivalent thickness I could find. I re-covered the plywood in beige Union Melton cloth from Woolies. The screws for the clamp part of the hinges are 1/4" in length.

I hope this helps.

Gentlemen
Many thanks for your inputs its given me all I need to know.
Looks like my screws are original length but as i just remembered they screw into a lug which extends into the boarding so they don't need to be that long .
Thanks again

John,

My original sunvisors were made from 3/16" hardboard, not plywood. They were covered with the same beige cloth as the headliner on the front sides only. The cloth was wrapped over to the back and glued, not sewn. The backs were then covered with same color rexine vinyl used on the interior trim panels. again glued in place, not sewn.

The original gearshift gaiter was made from leather in the same color as the interior, not black.

Thanks Rocky
I had seen the cloth /rexine combination before but I thought it was repairs, I didn't realise it was a factory finish .
I think I will use 5mm MDF since I know where i can lay my hands on some .
Thanks again
Cheers John

Hi All,
I have been reading this posting with interest and feel you are all missing an important
point, the original sunvizors where made of compressed board
which in an accident if hit with a head would give to a certain extent, using ply or mdf which will not not give is likly to take the top of your head off

Good point John not sure I will be travelling that fast and they do fold up a long way but always a chance I suppose. Certainly the thickness matters since the holding screws on the hinges dont like it to thick!
Cheers John

hi
it is easy with the web to find hard paper 3mm
i took hard paper 1,5 mm for my restoration easy to work with
you find it in different thickness
and if you take some glue it is hard enough for this solution
FT Franz

JK Bowman - it does not matter how far they fold up or how slow you are going. The momentum of an impact will cause them to drop down and be right in the line of your forehead. Do not use ply wood or MDF please.

Just for fun, here are 2 pics of my original sunvisors, which were recovered in Melbourne in about 1987, but retaining the original hardboard - you can see the milled side and what used to be the shiny side. A bit like the old British Rail toilet paper.
The hardboard measures 0.240 inches, or close to 6mm.
John.
