MG MG Y Type - Supply of petrol
I always make it full, when supplying petrol. However, when petrol becomes full, it sometimes overflows plentifully from an opening. Do you have the experience? Are any preventive measures carried out? Masaaki |

Masaaki I think that we all suffer the same problem. Fill up more slowly, and carry a soft cloth ! Michael |

The name invented by this forum for this well known and incureable(?) problem is "the burb". a thread on this subject: http://www2.mgcars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgbbs&mode=archiveth&subject=13&subjectar=13&thread=2004090912231331435 resulting hint and tip on the Y-website: http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgccy/hints&tips.htm#Filling up |

Thanks Willem - you beat me to it! Yes, the key is knowing how many gallons (US or Imperial) or litres to put in depending on how much you have in your tank to start with. Assuming your fuel sender and guage are working the table on Hints and Tips will help you prevent the overflow. Paul |

I have tried listening to the changing pitch of the petrol as it starts coming up the filler pipe: BURB & SPLASH! This will more frequently occur when an admirative plebean appears at the critical moment, yaking away loudly: "Hey! What kind of car is that, anyway? Did you know that the steering wheel is on the wrong side?" I have tried scientific calculations in order to predict the precise moment of regurgitation, before which I must interrupt the... BURB & SPLASH! After a particularly disastrous Burb when the paint on the wing was matted by petrol containing strong additives, I invented... THE BURP BIB! (Sorry for the misspelled Burb/Burp. I'm French.) See attached picture for this wondrous invention. Much cheaper than a respray. I expect to build an industrial empire upon this nuclear-age technological breakthrough. ![]() |
