MG MG Y Type - Surface rust
Hi guys, Has any one come across any good products to spot treat surface rust e.g. around boot, rain channels etc? It is not too bad yet, but we all know rust only gets worse. Thanks Murray |

I use Ku-rust made by Hammerite. The rust goes black and is claimed to then be stable. It takes paint well. |

Murray-Mike Went to their site and they don't seem to offer their products here, or to Canada. Sounds like a nice product, esp. for those tight spots. Paul |

Paul, I am currently in Utah at GOF West 2007, but I bought a similar product in WA USA. Cannot remember its name/manufacturer but will post again when I get home on Sunday/Monday next week. Hang in there. Paul |

Murray, There are many Rust Converters on the market that do a reasonable job for the handyman. However a little word of advice that is often omitted from these products. After they have reacted, dried and gone black as mentioned above always wash with clean water and dry thoroughly. These products often have acidic residues that are reactivated when they become moist and all your good work goes to crap! The best way to treat rust is remove it by abrasive blasting or sanding and then prime with a Zinc Rich paint. Not Zinc Phosphate or Zinc Chromate but a product that contains Metallic Zinc. Always Grey and very heavy for obvious reasons and commonly called Cold Galv. The other option is there are also products available that remove rust. On your side of the world contact International Paint (Akzo Nobel) in Felling, Newcastle on Tyne and see where you can get some Interplus 614. Then prime with a good Aluminium paint. I will try and send you a data sheet to your email address. Cheers Richo YT3208. |

Murray If blasting to clean metal is not an option at this time any "metal prep" product with phosphoric acid will do the job. Phosphoric acid converts the iron oxide to iron phosphate. If you keep the rusted surface damp with the product until is penetrates and converts all of the rust to iron phosphate, then thoroughly wash with water and it is ready to paint. You can even sand lightly if you wish. Phosphoric acid based products are available at many auto parts stores, and are commonly found at marine hardware stores as rust is a common problem on boats. I think you are looking for Depend, by Permatex, formerly a Loctite, or Duro brand rust converter. The thicker the base metal is, the better it works. |

Its Extend, not Depend. Is rust in cars relative to incontinency in humans? |
