MG MG Y Type - Tank Removal & Replacement on YA & YT

If one wants to remove the petrol tank from a Y/T, is it necessary to first remove the rear panhard rod / lateral control link?
And if worst comes to worst, does the rear section of the exhaust pipe also have to be removed?

I am asking this, because I have no car lift and want to keep the "crawling underneath the car" at a minimum :o)

cheers
Anton

P.S.: As you might know, the YB uses a front anti-roll bar instead of a rear panhard rod.

No it is not necessary to remove the Panhard Rod Anton.

Disconnect fuel filler pipe, tank to carburettor pipe, wires for fuel sender, then three bolts - one at each side and one at the front and that is is from memory.

Give yourself as much ground clearance as possible though as you may have to wiggle it a fair bit to get it out.

Thank you Paul
You are probably right about leaving the panhard rod in situ. I have however decided to removed the panhard rod, so I would not scratch/damage the paint off the tank when fitting it back in.
Especially the centre bolt is the culprit - It is quite long and the tank needs to be pushed forward quite a lot and will probably touch the panhard rod...

I used a trolley jack under the tank as the tank is heavy because of fuel and generally awkward to handle BOB YT4319

Thank you for suggesting to use a trolley jack, which I plan to do. I did drive the car until the level of the petrol in the tank was very low and sucked the remaining couple of litres out with a piece of garden hose - in the same way, as a thieve would steal a gallon or two, out of a car :o)

How high can you get the rear of the car using axle stands if you substantially chock both front wheels Anton?
Paul Barrow

Paul

I can not answer your question. When working underneath the car, I always use four axle stands. I am not taking any chances, and it is a small effort to lift up the front of the car as well.

Safety first :o)
