MG MG Y Type - Though luck
Friends Today, driving in a circular, somebody hit my YT in the back and pushed me into a lorry in front of me. I am lucky, I was not hurt. Probably no more Summer-Driving for my YT….. Best regards Anton ![]() ![]() |

Anton, I'm so sorry - yours is a spectacularly fine restoration, admired by many. I hope you're able to step back, breathe, and repair in due course. As you say, at least you're not physically hurt! John. |

Anton, I'm lost for words--so sad to see all your hard work damaged. |

Gentlemen Thank you for your sympathy-mails. I have to wait for the insurance guy to check the damage, before can climb in... Regards Anton |

So sorry to see that, but also glad you were not hurt.
My advice is to do your own repairs and get your insurer to pay for the estimated costs. All the panel work looks repairable with a bit of beating here & there - don't remove the guards from the body until you have them straight, or they won't refit easily. Matching the paint will be the greatest challenge - to do it right you might need a light coat over the entire car which means a total strip down. I only wish I was closer to help you. Tony |

So disappointing! Something we all fear. Good luck sorting it all out. |

Dear friends down under I was lucky to buy back a (not so perfect) spare front mudguard from the guy whom I had sold the second YT, I owned. My fear is that, with the big bang, the metal was stretched lot on my YT and to get it back into overall shape might be a big, big challenge. I leave it up to my panel beater, what to do best, but will point out Tony's remark about difficulties fitting a stranger-mudguard. Anyhow, I have to wait for the insurance's "expert" before we can start scheming and evaluating - hoping that they will cover the expenses..... In the meantime, can anyone help with a YA spare wheel compartment lid, and if possible at all, with two overriders and two pumpers???? cheers Anton ![]() ![]() |

You will find the steel in the YT very "workable" by a panel beater. This includes the bumpers and over-riders if you cannot get replacements. Make a list of the damaged components and post what you need here - I am sure the worldwide Y-Owners fellowship will help source anything that cannot be repaired. Next summer you will be back to enjoying driving your YT. In the meantime you have a "winter project" sorted. Safety Fast Tony The Classic Workshop Black Mountain Australia |

Hello From Canada Anton,
I have a YT I've been bringing back the past few years. I have admired your YT so much its my screen saver. I would like to paint mine the same colour as yours if you don't mind letting me know the code. Your spare wheel cover is quite repairable in a good panel beaters hands. I am in need of the left and right window supports that are secured to the body tube, do you know of any available? Mine have issues with the way the windscreen fits in them. Thanks Kim Herford kim.herford@gmail.com |

Anton, The over riders are the same as those used on 10hp Ford Prefects: https://www.smallfordspares.co.uk/products/e493a-17996-b-over-rider-upright-pattern The rear bumper face bar used on TD/F's is very similar to both front and rear ones used on YT's; available from all the usual MG suppliers. The YT backing bars and supports will fit. Probably easier/cheaper than staightening and rechroming your damaged ones. Good luck with repairs! Rocky YB0952 |

Kim It makes me proud, to hear that you use a photo of my YT for your screen saver. I attach the colour code - its of a Mini. Sorry, I can not help you with a windscreen support. Have you considered to chop and brace a TC or TD one? Iwish you luck Anton ![]() ![]() |
Anton Piller |
Tony Thank you for encouraging me to send a wish list, regarding the goddles, I am looking for. It really makes me feel good to know that the international Y-Ownership is trying to support me. Let me first try Europe to hunt for spares, as there are: at least one overrider at least the front pumper and probably the spare wheel compartment lid. Believe it or not, I was able to buy back a tatty l/h front mudguard that I sold to a friend, some 3 years back. It looks better on the photo than it really is. I have to wait what the insurance guy reckons, before I make a move and strip down the damaged parts. Keep your fingers cross that the chassis is not bent. I attach a picture of the lorry's trailer coupling that my YT was pushe onto (by a woman BMW driver). Regards Anton ![]() ![]() |

Rocky Thank you for the link to the overrider- heaven. If my panel beater mate does not come right with straightening the damaged stuff, I gladly will order Anglia parts :o) Has anyone out there fitted the anglia stuff - and if so, does it look right? However, I still have to wait for the insurace's clearance, before I can touch the MG. Depending of what he agees to, I will have to make a plan. I rather would stick to the original face bars, depending on my panel beater's skills. I am aware of the TD substitute. thank you & cheers Anton ![]() |

Hi Anton
So sorry to see the damage that has occurred to your marvellous YT. Al least you are ok. My friend Christopher bought a sedan with rear ender , apparently happened on the first outing after a major restoration. Tough little coot the Y is , the chassis was fine and a spare rear end was grafted on from the swage line down , and now who would know. I am sure yours will come back as good as new. I will check my parts stock and may have an extra spare wheel cover which may require a little work , but not as bad as yours. Photos to come. Clive |

Thank you, Clive It seems that Imight get a lid from the UK - I am waiting for photos.... So, please hold on for while. I'll keep you posted. cheers Anton |
Anton Piller |
Kim If you mean the windscreen supports - they are unique to an MG YT. Similar but different enough from TC and TD. Paul |

Anton--Firstly, sorry to see what's happened to your car-but-honestly, with the bumperbars removed the damage doesn't look too bad', certainly doesn't need any panel replacement---a good thump with a rubber hammer will pop most of that front guard out to an easily repairable state---don't take it off the car though, pop it out while it's still bolted up otherwise it'll go everywhere except where you want---the rear panel and wheel cover look simple repairs.
I know it's disappointing but it could have been a lot, lot worse, it's only light outer panel damage---it'll fix. willy |
William Revit |
Willy Thank you for your encouraging words. The panel beater has already started with the rubber hammer. I am glad, i was not hurt and that the culprits insurance is paying for the repair! Attached please find a photo of the car that pushed me into the rear of a lorry (and a tow bar arrangement). Actually it would have been an enjoyable "after hours" drive. Anton ![]() ![]() |

My heart bleeds for you . Many years ago i had similar damage to my YA front wing. Just take your time and that dent can be brought out again , it really can but as has been said keep it on the car . Even the back which could be a fiddle should come back out again . With patience i reckon you could get the bumpers back into shape .Might need a bit of heat and a definite re-chrome but its all do-able. They are tough old cars but the thicker metal of the day can work in your favour. Good luck Anton . It will all be ok . John B |

Thank you, John B. I am optimistic.... Anton |

Hello i have restored my lid, some rusty parts if you think you couldn't fix it and think about disposing of it call me I would love to try and save it with a hammer and a handheld english wheel the parts could be done i was astonished how easy to use such a english wheel if you understand what the rolls do hard on hard or hard on soft i made 2 runnning boards myself the first time using such a tool |
FT Franz |
Franz The car is now at the panel beater's shop. The man decides what to do. It looks as if I am lucky and will get decent lid from the UK - hold your fingers cross :o) As a matter of interest, plase lets see a picture of your english wheel.... Regards Anton |
