MG MG Y Type - Trafficator slip ring screw size

I am wiring my repaired trafficator mechanism (thank you Paul) into blinkers but find the slip ring has no screws in it other than for the horn wiring.
What size and thread are they?

hello stuart, i am not 100% on this but the electrical parts are usually BA sizes maybe 4BA or 6BA, hope this helps Graham

I removed the slip-ring horn screw this morning and checked that it fitted into the other screw holes - it does.

The screw I removed is a cheese head machine screw with a thread 5/16" long and an O/dia of 0.118" or 3mm. This is mid way between 5BA (0.126) and 6BA (0.110) dia. I think it is about 40tpi. I can find no screws with this dia and tpi.

They may be Whitworth or Metric. If the 40 TPI is close:-

Tapping drill dia 0.120" is 5/32 Whitworth 32 TPI
Clearance drill dia 0.158"

Tapping drill dia 0.113 is 9/64 Whitworth 40 TPI
Clearance drill dia 0.147"

The clearance drill dia for 3mm 50.8 TPI is 0.125"

I will check for more information in my files later.

As my YT is a standard RHD model, according to David Lawrence LTBYs it shouldn't have the knurl ring on the steering wheel hub. I am therefore assuming a PO has acquired one, including the incomplete clockwork mechanism (now fixed - thank you Paul) and fitted it to my YT.

My question to other RHD YT owners - does your YT (if standard) have all 4 wiring set screws in the Slip ring? And how many of you have fitted the knurl ring and use it?

Geoff I agree, I can not see the factory using anything other than BA threaded screws for small diameter screws.

Further measuring of the Slip-ring screw and the 2BA, 4BA and 6BA screws I have shows the measured O/D is less than the stated O/D of these screws.

Attached is a image of a comparison of measurements for 2, 4 and 6BA screw treads and my interpolation back to 5BA.

Although a 6BA screw will fit in the slip ring, I am confident the set screws are 5BA as the screw I removed is close to 44tpi (closest gauge my bolt shop had) and 5BA is 43tpi.

I will check with members of the local Model Railway Club before ordering some 5BA set screws.

cheers
Stuart

I just checked the Slip ring screw in the Hex stud which holds the trafficator clockwork to horn rim - 1/8" Whit according to Tony's info on the Hints and Tips page. The slip-ring screw screws in but binds after a while.
