MG MG Y Type - Two dipsticks on the one motor
I've just picked up another Y, this time from South Australia and on getting it home I naturally started to inspect it closely. Everything checked out as being very original and in excellent condition. As it hadn't run for 8 or 9 years, I was checking all fluids and to my surprise found that the motor (XPAG)has two (2) dipsticks. One towards the back on the normal distributor side and one towards the front of the motor on the exhaust side. Can anyone tell me what's going on.
I'd appreciate some insights Cheers Christopher |

Hi Christopher, you may have a Wolseley block made to look like an XPAG block. What sump do you have? Don TF 4887 TC1736 |

Hi Don, Thanks for that. The car is up at the factory so I'll have to check this out on Thursday. I'll take some photos to post so you can check on your theory. Thanks again,It is a strange one. Christopher. |

Christopher, if you send me any casting numbers I can probably tell you what block it is, the XPAG should have the octagonal MG cast in just under where the generator mounts. Regards, Don |

My TF seems to also have two dipsticks. The one on the engine, and the driver! |

Yes Christopher it sounds from your description an XPAW engine fitted to Wolseley's. I believe that it is considered the best of the XPAG family. When we had a TA (1998-2011) that was fitted with an XPAW engine, although the dipstick had been moved to the correct side (offside) for the MG. The original hole on the n/side of the block had been blanked over. I know of a YB which also has an XPAW fitted although the dipstick has been retained on the n/side (drivers). If I can find a photo of the TA's block then I will post it on this site. Cheers Jerry |
