MG MG Y Type - Values

Appreciate had thread here before on "talking down prices of values of Y'S" I sadly couldn't add to archived thread again! annoying, but moving on to the point......For sale on link below;

This YA6783 is still for sale, doesn't take brain surgeon to work out (Wh)Y?
Again no personal interest or knowledge of the car but, £16K?
The couple YT's for sale on same site must be undervalued by comparison.

You're right Rich - mental money.
Interesting photos of one of the YT's on the same site though:

Do you think they were being "artistic" with the choice of location? Or ironic? Or was that simply the best they could find!

Cheers,
Saul.

The YA looks stunning. I dont think £16k is "mental" at all. Look at the price Magnettes and TD's go for now. In fact most Classic Cars have increased in value in the last few years as people spend their money on a fun investment rather than risk it on dodgy stock markets or in fragile banks. If you assume that the YA has a couple of grand of "trade" premium in it, the "real" private sale price will be about £13k - which I think is currently right for a YA in that condition.

And this one

looks absurdly cheap!!

I regularly look at the Y Type's advertised for sale and can't help thinking that the prices have stagnated or perhaps sellers are asking too much, a case in point being a YT advertised for sale across the English Channel which is mental money in my view, probably accounting for why it is still for sale. There are several Saloon's on the market at this present time, which have been advertised for some time now, assuming the adverts are still up to date and still on the market they too have been about for while.

I think you are right on both counts Richard. This is the case not only with Y's but T's as well. TD's particularly have dropped Hagerty's average vale is £15.9k, whilst for a TC its £21.5k and TF 21.9k (1250) and for £24.7K (1500

Hagerty note an increase in sales at Auction and this maybe a more realistic assessment. As with all older cars 'average' price can be based on a number of factors - condition, rarity, spares availability and above all provenance.

If you are fortunate enough to have a complete ownership record then I would suggest this adds to the value. One owner cars probably are more sought after and originality is another factor.

A completely rebuilt YA/YB might not command the same price as a one or two owner model in original condition with provenance perhaps the key.

As we all know spending a fortune on restoring a car will rarely result in an owner getting their money back. Though some folk do expect this it would appear!

It all comes down to whether someone is desperate to buy the car and if it comes to a bidding war (auction/e-bay) then some very high prices may be achieved. Folk see this and assume that their model must be near in value without really appreciating the particulars of a sale.

Horses for courses but an excellent classic car in one of the popular models will probably always find a buyer throughout the year.

Use them when ever you can.. and if there is a particular model that you would like then, providing you have the storage, go and get it!

Have fun Jerry
