MG MG Y Type - Wet Boot

When my YB is exposed to rain for any but the shortest time, I get water in my boot that also soaks the spare wheel compartment. It looks like the water runs down the folded-up edge, collects at the bottom and overflows into the boot. There is no rubber seal. Now on a Thirties Lagonda saloon I have seen that it has drain tubes fitted to the bottom of the boot opening preventing water to collect there. Neither has my car such tubes fitted to it, nor is there any mention of them in any reference book on the Y. How can I keep my rear end (of the car!) dry?

Hi Remo

It would be so tempting to say "Do not go out in the rain" but that is not much good!

NTG do a boot seal and SWC seal - I don't know if it is any good as my cars lower boot lip was so badly butchered that it would'nt fit, howver, all that is now being reshaped and I would love to hear from someone who has fitted this seal and had a good experience from it.

I used the NTG seals when I did a major rebuild in 1999. Since I have a YT and try never to put the top up I have only been caught in heavy rain 3 or 4 times but have had no problems with water in the boot or SWC. In washing the car the bottom of the boot channel will fill with water but is easily moped up. Terry

Boot seals. All spare wheel pans, where the tools clip, should have two drain places and we picked these up when my sheeting was replaced. They show of course on p128/9 in LTBY by Lawrence.

I am pretty sure that my rectangular foam extrusion keeps water at bay a bit because the sharp edge of the lids are in contact with the seal while they are closed. But once wet there is a rust danger?

I share your concern on this Slater. It is very similar to the foam under the back of the fold-away hood on the MGB I have. If the hood is stored on the transom of the car and left it will lead to rust so, my suggestion would be if you have run the car in the rain, leave the boot (trunk) lid and SWC lid open / off, once the car is in the garage, so that the air can circulate and it can dry off.

Ensure that the channel is well waxoyled before you put the rubber extrusion in though.

Any other views?

Interestingly enough I have just posted a Technical Advice on this matter of boot seals on on the website http://www.mgytypes.org.
