MG MG Y Type - What size radial fits on a YB rim?

Yes I realize some people don't like the idea of using radials and that an inflated radial might not fit in the original storage but lets get past all that.

What size has any of you had success with using the standard 15" x 5.5" rim.
5.5 = 140, cant find any of these for sale. I have found only one 165 listed but most sellers only offer 175 as a min width which is 1.5 inches over at 7". Maybe this works?

I am looking to do a price comparison of an easy switch to radial (i.e. no rim mods) v using very expensive cross plys.

Thanks

The radial tyres on my YB are from Vredestein. The size being: 155 SR 15 82S.

You are correct in your assumption that a fully inflated spare will not fit into the spare wheel housing. Mine is deflated to 10lb psi and I have a foot pump to inflate the tyre if ever needed.

The price has increased since I bought mine, currently the UK price is just over £100 per tyre, that includes VAT (value added tax,) delivery, fitting, balancing and disposal of the old tyre charge.

R Taylor, Thanks for replying.

Thats a good idea on under inflated spare mind you a lot of cars dont even come with a spare now, just a can of puncture repair foam.
I'll see if I can find those or similar in NZ and compare to ne cross ply price.

165s do the job well. I use them but have a 155 as a spare to avoid having to deflate it. I have got a 165 into the slot but it can be a problem to get out on a stormy night at the side of a busy road. I think whether it will fit depends on the manufactureres interpretation of what size and shape a 165 tyre actually is.

Good point Ian.
I found those Vredesteins here in NZ but they are $287 nz each, cross ply's range from $303 to $464 each but I found some new 155R15 (130 mph speed rating) for $138nz each, there tempting.

Kevin,

Excelsior produces a 5.50X15 bias ply tire with identical tread pattern to the original Dunlop C49's.

I suspect shipping to NZ may cost more than the tire.

Yeah will probably cost a heap Rocky.
The guy that sells the above Tyres here in NZ said the shipping cost a container from China to NZ used to cost $2,000 nz now it costs him $8,000 nz so everything must go up.
