MG MG Y Type - which exhaust?

My exhaust is not leaking, but it's not damping either; my wife commented that she could here me driving away from home for several minutes...
So the search is on for a new exhaust that silences the car a bit more.

I know of a German YT with a twin damper exhaust, straight from a classic Mini and that sounded very civilised, but it wouldn't be original looking.

Other sources are stainless steel items from the OCC and NTG, but (older) comments on both vary in BBS threads.
Who has recently fitted a new exhaust and if so, what are your thoughts on the fitting quality and the sound dampening?
Willem van der Veer

If the existing exhaust is in acceptable condition and only the sound is objectionable you could try stuffing the tailpipe with stainless steel wool.

I used to do this on my MK-9 Jag when it went in for yearly inspection.

It had "Cherry Bomb" mufflers. A bit loud but pleasant.

I have fitted several MGOCC Stainless Steel exhausts and have had very satisfying results. Be careful though to specify whether you want a Y/YB or a YT front pipe as I believe they differ because of the different manifolds for single or twin carbs Willem.

i have looked at both mgocc and ntg exhaust systems and both silencers are well made, i bought the ntg one only because its a straight thru one and the mgocc is not.i did not buy front or rear pipes because i'm not that struck on them. my own view is the front pipe curves round to sharply which brings it much closer to the slipring ass and the extra heat will cause it to crack and disentergrate . i enclose a picture of the different run of these stainless front pipes. my rear pipe is made from 28mm copper pipe and the only bend in it is slightly upwards to reach the rear hanger

Wow great photo John. Have you shared this intel about proximity with the MGOCC? If not, I will be happy to talk with Brian Rainbow.

Hi John, Thanks for you picture that confirms my hesitation to buy unseen.

If the silencer you bought is straight through, how would you comment on it's silencing characteristics?
Willem van der Veer

Hi Willem,
https://www.acoustics.asn.au/conference_proceedings/AAS2005/papers/34.pdf You need to read this sites info on silencers, a straight thru silencer does not have to be noisey its just a different more effiient way of absorbing the exhaust from the engine. The tailpipe i use more likely to make a noise than the silencer. I'm trying to think of a way you can hear my engine running and revving i'll come up with something.

Hi Paul,
when i was go'ing to renew the exaust system i sent for the lot,on doing a trial fit of the front pipe, when it was clamped against the mounting bracketon the g/box the flange would not line up with the manifold studs i mentioned this and the other problems and was told "well your the only one whose complained and we have sold loads of them" i also spoke to the supplier and manufacturer of the pipes and sent them an orig2016-10-26

Thanks John for your input.

Are the diameters of the old and new frontpipe the same? If so I'd like to use the old front pipe with a new damper.

What diameter tailpipe do you use? Or maybe I should ask if the in- and outlet of the damper are the same diameter.

Somehow I would like to use a bit larger diameter tailpipe in the hope of better flow. Yes, I know that too large an exhaust is detrimental to performance but just a bit larger (like the TD?) wouldn't hurt?
Willem van der Veer

Willem,
front silencer (Damper????) stub is 42mm OD and the Rear stub 36mm OD.Picture of original front pipe into stainless silencer ( no sleeve fitted). Rear copper 28mm OD tailpipe into silencer ( sleeve fitted between tailpipe and silencer) i think you could go up to 35mm OD with the tail pipe size, slightly more if you went over the stub rather than inside it. Done a bit of checking this morning TD/TF tail pipes are not long enough for a Y type and would have to be joined.Although it does not seem to effect performance/mpg i have to admit there must be a slight restriction using 28mm pipe in the 34/35mm outlet on my car so i might go and get a piece of 35mm copper pipe and fit it to my car.The Stubs each end of the silencer ( Damper??)are aproxx 70mm long.

Closer view of front pipe connection. white stuff is exhaust paste

Hi John,

You've helped tremendously with all your information. I'll probably go for an NTG straight through silencer with original front pipe and locally sourced stainless steel 40x2mm (= 36mm ID) tailpipe.

BTW: 'Damper' is a bad translation of the Dutch word 'demper' that translates correctly into silencer.... Not to myself; never type in haste in a foreign language.

Willem van der Veer

Hi Willem,
Glad to help, picture is of tailpipe straight out of silencer only bend is upwards not really a bend but a slight curve.
