MG MG Y Type - WHITE WALL TYRES

Dear All

Hopefully towards the end of next week I should be picking up the YT that I have bought from the USA.
The car has, as far as I can gather, only had 3 previous owners. Bill Burnham (from New Hampshire) who sold me the car had owned it from 1998 and it would appear that its previous owners were based in New York State to where it was exported in early 1950.

The details are: MGYT/EXR/4372 with engine number XPAG/TR/14022.It is known to the Register and I will provide more details when I have had the chance to look over the carin detail.

However, it sports a set of white walled tyres. It has been suggested that there ought to be no problem in removing the tyres and then refitting them with the white wall facing inwards. It certainly looks feasible but has anyone done this?
If not can the white band be removed or painted with tyre paint?

Any thoughts would be helpful.

Sincerely

Hi Jerry

no problem so long as you take the tires off the rims, reverse them and then refit the rims correctly rather than just reverse the tire and rim - ROFL :-).

Personally though I would wait until you have had the car for a while as the white walls may grow on you. They can look quite good on YTs.

I wouldnt go for removing them as anything you put on the paint could deteriorate the wall of the tire, plus be a UK MOT failure as the side of the tire wall will be disrupted if not structurally damaged.

You will of course on importation to the UK need to get it MOTd as a matter of course for Road Fund Excise Duty and Registration/Licensing purposes.

Sounds like a nasty rash to me!

Am I allowed a comment now that I've sold my Y?

Here it is anyway.

Whitewall tyres were an abomination when seen around the 50s, and still are

So there!

Thanks for your thoughts Michael. I agree with you entirely - somehow I dont think that they will 'grow on me'. Naff is my response (er.. that tranlasted means 'ghastly, rubbish etc..'. Though of course beloved by many of our American chums.

Sincerely

I doubt they will grow on you. White Wall tires get scuffed and dirty. After a time you will find them a lot of work to keep up and a bloody nuisance taking time better spent on other things. Terry
