MG MG Y Type - Wind deflectors

My 1950 YA Y6041 has what I can only describe as wind deflectors fitted to both front doors, in the same place that quarter-lights would be. They are obviously a well-made commercial product, the frame is made from steel and the glass is triplex which seems to match the car glass. They are on the car in all photographs I have of it with previous owners going back to the mid-1970s but I have never seen another Y Type fitted with them. You can just see them on the car in Ys on parade, which shows how well they fit. They work very well, with the driver's window open there is air but no draught and I can drive in rain with the window open without getting wet (or I would be able to if the windscreen didn't leak). Does anyone else have them, were they an MG/Nuffield optional extra or were they designed for a different car and fitted by a previous owner?

Love them !
I've seen them before on other cars but no idea from whence they came. However, I'd love to make a pair for Y7207 (Y's on parade). Any chance of details and some pictures.
Also like your period mirror,. I've had to make do with wing mounts which I'm not sure were available in 1951.
Pleased I'm not the only one with a leaking windscreen. Serves us right for taking old ladies out in the rain.

Thanks. I'll take some close up pictures later this week and email them to you.
Coincidentally, I bought another Desmo side mirror for the l/h side at Totally MG last week which matches perfectly and is an original in brand new condition. I'll let you have the traders details in a separate email.
Not solved the puzzle yet though!

PS

I would like to have the Desmo mirror info also.

Thanks

Are the wind deflectors fitted to the outside of the doors?(Its hard to see from the photo). Somewhere amongst my pile of Y type spares(junk?)I have a pair of wind deflectors made by Auster which were fitted to the doors of a YB.
DM Gibson

They are on the outside with the glass angled vertically at about 30 degrees to the door window. They are very unobtrusive and difficult to see in photographs. In the photograph you can see the vertical line of the glass, and just see the bottom of the frame below the bottom of the driver's window. Were yours made by the Auster aeroplane company especially for the Y type?
P S Sharp

I dont think the auster wind deflectors were made specifically for the Y type. Because they fit on the outside I would imagine that they are fairly universal for saloons of that era.

Hi Guys

Dont confuse the Austler Aeroplane co. with the company that made car components in the late 40s and 50s in the UK. Austler also supplied the fold down windscreen on the YT and the sidescreens for the weather(proofing - they must have been having a laugh) on the YT too.

Dont know if they did any other MG equipment - but then I am only interested in Ys so I am just a bit blinkered in my vision!!

My 1950 YA .. #5539 ... is fitted with the same deflectors and these show on all early photos of the car. Yes they make quite a difference in keeping the driver and passengers cool on this side of the world.

I trawled through all the Ys on Parade but I missed yours Elise. Looking again I also missed YB 0805 in the Netherlands which has the same type as yours. Mine are different, the rear edge of the glass is vertical, making the deflector triangular rather than the romboid shape of yours. Glad to know they work as well as mine, though we have less of a problem keeping cool over here.
The Auster connection may be relevant, as well as screens for the YT they made (non-MG) wind protection screens for back passengers in cabriolet type cars.

Hi Guys

I thought I'd let this thread spin along before adding my two cents worth. I am not surprised Elise has the wind deflectors on her YA in Australia as they were a common after market fit to all sorts of makes in the sixties and seventies here and then seem to have gone out of fashion. This could be due to electric windows or better shaped cars or more cars fitted with airconditioning!

I hadn't given deflectors a thought as both our cars are soft tops. Incidentally the triangular defelectors for soft tops cars are a failure!

If someone could make news ones for Ys and Zs I reckon there would be a market.

Cheers

Just another observation. The deflectors on my YA are not fixed, they pivot which allows control of fresh air into the car.

Yes I would think so, too. Saw them first time on a Citroën Traction Avant and thought it was a good idea. What kind of company would be there to make the product available again ? They would need the original pattern, so the original maker should also be known. Perhaps NTG could try, or those companies who supply things with exotic names like "hidem banding", perhaps ?
