MG MG Y Type - Windscreen seal
I am having to renew the glass/frame seal to my YA. It would appear that Woolies R315 is the correct seal - could anyone confirm this? Also the old seal has been fitted in two sections matching the two halves of the frame, surely it should be in one piece with the join at the top. Any info gratefully recieved, Regards, John Foster |

One piece John but do not recall where the join should go (top or bottom) off hand. Believe my seal came from NTG at the time. Paul |

Hi John Illogical as it may seem, the join should be at the bottom middle. If at the top, any water that does ingress, will either sit around the inside at the top or have to find its way around and down the inner framework. I looked at several cars before I did mine years ago and they were all at the bottom. Hope this helps. Keith |

Simply to confirm that I replaced the screen seal on mine last year and placed join at bottom central where my previous seal had been. No problems have resulted. Bob |

I have a spare screen from a long ago scrapped Y and the rather perished rubber seal is jointed at the bottom centre Bryan |

Are you all talking about the same seal R315 looks like the inner seal around the glass and could well be at the top I can't see a join on mine at the bottom and the top is obscured. This is a very tight seal and I can't see how water could get into it. R156 is the outer seal and is definitely at the bottom. Peter |

Just to increase the uncertainty, on closer look of the original seal it appears to be a vulcanised joint, suggesting it was put on as a complete surround. Just have to accept that most cars of that time did let water somewhere. Bryan |

As a historical note, when the first VW Beetle appeared in Britain everyone was astonished how water tight it was. It was said that ones ears popped when the doors were closed, and for a publicity stunt they floated one in the sea and even had a car cross the channel, even so my YA could still see them off on the road. Power Bond Super glue makes an unbreakable joint on rubber. Fit the seal, cut the ends dead square with a very sharp knife pull the last few inches back, glue ends and hold together accurately for a few seconds before you thumb it back in and you will have a perfect joint that could be top or bottom. This is also a cure for joints that have shrunk back after over stretching when fitting. Picture of power bond attached. Peter ![]() |

when i replaced my original factor seal on YB0362 last year it was a one piece seal like a giant rubber band with sides i may still have if i have will post a picture. because the repacement seal is a flat strip its not that easy to get round the screen and keep it there whilst putting on the frame my trick was to put the rubber round the frame and hold in place with 189 clothes pegs!!leave it six weeks and then when you remove the bottom set of pegs it stays in shape while you feed the frame on, as you push the frame on gradully remove the pegs up both sides John UMG624 |
