MG MG Y Type - Windscreen wiper motor

I took my car in for MOT yesteday (won't know how it got on until today...) but guess what it rained very heavily and despite hours messing about with the windscreen seal....yes, I had some water coming in. . Also, I had forgotten how NOISY the wipers are - is this normal - a loud whirring sound.

Couldnt hear it over here so guess it wasnt too loud! Main thing is: is the motor getting hot to the touch? If it is then it will benefit from a rebuild and Masaaki Sakaguchi is your man for a rebuild (see link on Suppliers page at http://www.mgytypes.org).

If it is not getting hot, but is just noisy then you can take the lid off the gear box and scrap out all the old gunky grease and repack either with Vasolene petroleum jelly or regular multi-purpose automotive grease.

PS Good luck with the safety inspection.

Loud whirring and grinding, that's what my system sounds like! One of the projects is to clean and lubricate this but I don't think it will make much difference in noise.

As long as the wipers work the secret is only to turn them on for the MOT and use Rainex on the screen which makes the raid drops coalesce in to large drops which run off the screen giving adequate visibility, with a little care.Certainly no worse than the useless wiping of the average Y.
Michael Nicholson

Sinceyou can open the windscreen on a Y then strictly speaking you dont need windscreen wipers for an MOT as you have an option. Of course its not especially brilliant if you are driving!
It does depend on the view of the MOT tester.
However, it would be sensible to check this through in the MOT regulations.
No doubt someone will advise me that I have it wrong!

You are correct in that they are not obligatory, however, all and any equipment fitted to a car and covered to be tested under an MoT does need to be effective and in working order. That having said although my MoT inspector always checked that both wipers worked ... it was only so that we could have a laugh about it!

Same thing applies to the spare wheel - if it is there, it has to be inspected. If it isnt there ...
or at least such was the case when I left the UK! No doubt the EU will stick its oar in there before long.

Here in Holland when the car fails it's MOT on it's spare wheel, I always ask to remove it and fit it after the inspector is gone, no EU rules yet!

It's strange that the MOT in the UK does not cover the speedo. Any other vagaries in other countries where some form of vehicle testing is in place?

Scoop out what is left of the old grease, because the lubricating oil that was in it is long gone.
Repack with some nice Dow Corning/Molykote 33 Light Silicone Bearing Grease. Lube the cable, too as well as the speedo cable, the brake cables-and forget it!
Silicone oil won't evaporate in this lifetime, and 33 is good for all temps on the planet.
Request a samplle: www.dowcorning.com
Don't mix Silicone Grease with any other kinds, i.e. Lithium-Complex, Aluminum-Complex, Calcium-Complex, etc.
