MG MG Y Type - Wiper Confusion!

For some reason my passenger side wiper wants to work back to front when I turn it on. I presume the arm points out and when I turn it on the motor wants to push the wiper down rather than up. I turned the wiper so it pointed in but that didnt work either. Any ideas!

Marc,

My guess is that one of the wiperarmboxes is mounted upside down.

The are kind of rack and pinion devices and if f.i. the rack (= wipercable) is mounted "above" the pinion (= wiperarmaxle) on the left side and on the right side "under" the pinion, then the wipers will turn in different directions.

This reminds me of a Gymkhana in Luxembourg in a LHD Mini on which they mounted the steering rack upside down, making it a RHD Mini that went left when the driver steered to the right. To make it even more interesting the throttle and clutch controls were left in the original LHD-position, for the navigator to control.
Can you imagine the interesting scenes of otherwise loving couples trying to complete the circuit? Hilarious!

Could be but how odd! How do I get at the wiper motors - via the dash?
Marc Hanson

The wiper motor is under the bonnet on the bulkhead at the right side.

I don't know (yet) how to reach the wiperarmboxes exactly, they are under the windscreen facia rail. Look up under the dashboard and they are clear to see. (if I was into "rubbing it in", I would say you can see it clearly on page 159 of "Let there be Y's, but that would be mean, wouldn't it?) ;-).
I have to reach them too, for cleaning and lubrication. My wipers have the irritating fault that they always work except when it is raining...

It might just be that you need to slacken off the nut on the spindle and re position the wiper arm. If it has worked lose you can get the wiping action out of sync. I have had a lot of experience 'doing the wiper arms' including taking the front fascia rail off several times. It is a good idea to check the electrical contacts and earth wire etc when you have it stripped down too. Never put the fascia rail back on until the wipers are all working as its a job and a half to take it off again.
D MULLEN

I think David hits the nail on the head. There probably isn't enough room to mount the wiperarmbox up side down.
W. van der Veer

Yep - David is right, slacken the nut and reposition the arm, and re-tighten.

Why don't you all use Rain-x on your screen then the wipers are superfluous?

Mine made it harder to see rather than clearer, before the Rain-x, that is.

They only need to move once a year to satisfy the MOT inspector, and not then if you can convince him that the screen opens, in which case no wipers are required.

... or you could tie a polish rag around it and leave it as it is and just have it polish the bonnet!
