MG MG Y Type - Wire wheel conversion for Y's

I want to convert my YA from disk to wire wheels.
Which parts do I need?

That is not really easy. The PCD of 5x112 is not common on other cars with wirewheels.

You could fit TF or MGA parts on the front but that would include most of the front suspension, including the brakes and drums. You can then fit an MGA rear axle to convert the rear.

Why don't you mail me on vdveery5888 at online.nl; I have some pictures of a YA with MGA suspension on 16" centre-laced wire wheels.

Hi,

We have converted our YA special MG3222, by using MWS splined hubs drilled to 112 PCD, with new extended 80mm UNF wheel studs from a Cooper S, these fit into the original hub just knock out the old BSF ones. You will need to use the mini wheel nuts and 2x 8mm aluminium mag wheel spacers to clear the hub, this extends the track by 16mm per side. The rear is done in a similar way however, there is no need to change the wheel studs as only a 3mm spacer is required. Regards, Brad

OK Brad, that's the easy way to do it....... ;-)

Thanks Brad,
Is a 80mm wheel stud standard on mini's or only on Cooper S? Why do I need 2x8mm spacers at the front? or do you mean 16mm spacer?
Which wire wheel do I have to use? which off set?

Have a look at the MWS web site: http://www.mwsint.com,
for hubs and wheels, their fitting guide gives some good diagrams showing the set up we are talking about.

The wheels I chose where 15x5 60 spokers with a standard offset for MG TC&D because you can use 175x70 radial tyres currently available for the new mini at about $A75 ea. The Pirellis have a tread pattern that not too modern and not extremely low profile.

The wheel studs are from a mini cooper S and are used with the offset hubs and spacers that are used on hot minis with wide wheels. These come in different lengths up to 100mm and are high tensile 3/8 UNF hence the need for the matching mini wheel nuts. These have a smaller OD and this helps with the clearance when fitting the wire wheel. These should be readily available from any mini speed shop or supplier.

The spacers used are commonly available for mag or alloy wheels and are sold in pairs in 3,6,8 thickness, I found I needed a 16mm spacer to clear the hub at the front outer bearing. So I used 2 8mm spacers on each front hub. These are multi fit for 100-120mm 4 & 5 stud, conveniently these have the same OD as the spline hub rear flange. So you need 4 for the front and 2: 3mm spacers for the rear.

All the cautions noted in the MWS fitting guide should be observed. The local agent here provided undrilled hubs and organised the drilling of the hubs at nominal cost. Regards, Brad

Just checked my notes and the cooper s wheel studs were 60 not 80mm and here is the link to the supplier:
