MG MG Y Type - Wiring or nothing
Went for a 50 mile ride todsy in my Y...Loved every part of it except 5 miles out at a stop sign saw some smoke coming from the rt hand steering wheel or in that area of the dash....Smelled like wiring too and then after checking and not feeling any hot wires under the dash or under the hood kept going and the car ran fine except that I noticed the amp gauge was pegged to the plus side (charging) unless I came to a stop sign which then brought the needle to the center or slightly showing discharge. Everthing seemed to work fine other than that. Sound fmiliar to anyone?.....Thanks.... |

Check the control box for stuck contacts. |

I was thinking the same thing there Marvin. The control box is not something you want to mess with though unless you are knowledgable about what you are doing as a maladjusted control box can cause a fire. Seek out a competant and registered auto electrician who knows about control boxes if in doubt. Paul PS You were going to send me some words to go with your Ys on Parade entry - look forward to hearing from you soon. |

Thanks Marvin - I have updated the entry for Y 1805 now. Paul |

I highly recommend Jerry Felper of British Auto Electric down in Anaheim. He's a YA owner among other early M.G.s. He can service the generator too if needed. |

I wonder if it had something to do with the semaphores inasmuch as the smoke came from around the steering wheel when I turned the semaphore on at the first stopsign I came to and voila there was smoke and I turned the semaphore off and it quit smoking....???? |

It may be that the wiring has worn though in the stator tube where it comes up out into the mechanism, but it is unlikely as MG installed a spring coil through which the wires should pass and thereby minimising the abrasion of the wires against the neck of the stator tube. Notwithstanding, it may be worth checking behind the turn switch for wear on the wires causing a minor short. Paul |
