MG MG Y Type - XPAW Gearbox suitable for YB?
Hi all, Can anybody tell me if the internals and ratios from an XPAW gearbox , serial number 162176-Q9- 21L5, are suitable as spares for the YB gearbox. I think the box came from a Wolseley. Any advice appreciated. Thanks. Keith ![]() |

I dont think the internals are the same ...the man to ask is linked on this site ie Klassik Transmissions....to be honest if your gearbox is not working properly either convert to the 5 speed ex Sierra box or have the Y g/box rebuilt or competently repaired. Not really a DIY propostion unless you have the knowledge. I have the Y gearbox but I sometimes think the 5 speed would be a good option if expensive. Note that the clutch/bellhousing differs on YA and YB - the first having 7 1/4 in clutch and later YBs having an 8in clutch/bellhousing arrangement. The YA and YB gearboxes are otherwise the same but the Wolseley 4 44 had a column gearchange so doubt if you can swop internal bits around? |

Actually there is some discussion on this site.See: http://www.mgcars.org.uk/imgytr/neilc.shtml#Gearbox%20and%20Rear%20Axle%20Ratios |

Hi David. THanks for all the information and the pointer to the information on the IMGYTR site. It would seem that the ratios are not the same , there fore not compatable with the Y Type gears. I was viewing it as a souce of spares should I need to rebuild my own 'box at a future date. |

Keith, absolutely nothing in the XPAW gearbox will fit in the XPAG gearbox except for the nuts and bolts and the output flange. To me this is most unfortunate since I have a couple of these Worseley 4/44 gearboxes in beautiful condition. Cheers, Hugh |

Hugh, THank you for your confirmation that the XPAW gearbox will not make a suitable "donor" of its internals for the XPAG 'box. Do you happen to know if it is any good for the MG TF box, as this is what the present owner originally bought it as spares for? Would be good to find a use for it. Thanks. Keith |

It's no good for a TF either. The TF 'box is essentially the same as the one fitted to the YB. The biggest difference is that the TD/TF has a remote control gearlever whereas the Y has a direct acting gearlever. |

Thank you Willem. Looks like a non starter all round. Pity. Thanks Keith |

Someone is selling a Y gearbox on eBay currently (listed this morning)http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130770690460&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:1123. Depending on condition (and components like this should be inspected by a buyer or someone who knows what they are looking for for a buyer) this may be of use. It may be worse than the one you have though too! I have no financial interest in the sale. Paul |
