MG MG Y Type - Y distributor
My YB is fitted with an original distributor. Over the years I have considered overhauling it or replacing it with one from a 1275cc mini which is near identical according to Neil Cairns. However, getting a decent 1275 Austin mini one is difficult as the springs seem to be no longer available. What is the best option - has anyone out there conveted a Y distributor to quickfit type points as the 407050 type are hard to get now. If I buy an old type Austin mini A series distributor it seems impossible to get the correct springs to overhaul it. Advice welcome but I need specific advice rather than just general info. Should I just send my original one for overhaul? |

The brand new and very expensive Lucas distributors now sold for the 1275cc MG Midget is virtually identical to the 1275cc Mini one. Any Midget specialist will get you one. It just costs a lot more new! MiniSport will sell you a brand new Mini one, again expensive. Neil. |

David, A couple of years ago, I rebuilt a worn-out distributor for my Y Type using parts supplied mail order by Peter Roe, Northwest Classic Spares. He has the old Lucas data sheets and was able to supply all the correct parts including baseplate, cam, bob weights, springs, condenser, rotor arm, cap and the 407050 points. He's very helpful, and provides quick service at keen prices. His website is www.northwestclassic.co.uk and his email address is norwestclassic@aol.com (careful with the spelling - there's no 'th' in the email address) Usual disclaimer - I've no connection with Peter or his business, other than as a satisfied customer. Cheers, Bill. |

Hi Bill Excellent recommendation for an often encountered problem. I will add it as a link and as a Hint & Tip to the site if I may. Thank you Paul |

David Mullen I am the owner of Japanese Y-type. I made a spring in side of DKY. And, TOGGLE LINK was made, too. That is equal to the original. If you can send original distributor to me, that will be returned to you under the perfect condition. And, make contact with David Hague and Jack Murray of Y-typeREG that you want to know a matter of me . Masaaki |

Many thanks for the offer - I have already contacted Peter Roe of Northwest Classics and he is not far from me - only 'down the road' in Manchester. Very kind of you to offer to help though. Best wishes. |
