This is the address for the LED bulbs, when in site go to l/h side to shop then again down l/h side to dachboard lights etc righthand side E10 bulbs =" for £4 plus P/P they are DUAL polarity, While you are in the site have a look at the Trafficator festoon bulbs they are the bees knees.Might try to post apicture of them in action
John
PS no stock at the moment but will be in before Xmas
presy grandad!!

Should read 2 for £4
JC Jebb

From memory I think you need 6 (aka 3 Pairs) for a Y/YB and 8 (aka 4 Pairs) for a Y/T. If I have this incorrect can someone please update as I am not in a position to check this currently.

Paul
Paul Barrow

you need three Paul 2 for speedo 1 for fuel/amp/pet
JC Jebb

should have said for Y /YB i dont know for YT
JC Jebb

here's comformation

JC Jebb

just had a report in from a yt owner, the result for YTs is better but not perfect using these LEDs. i believe the way the bulbs are held behind the dashboard is a bit crude half the light tends to go towards the bulkhead, not like the bulb holders in a Y or YB . has any one got a picture of the back of a YT?
John

DASHBOARD NOT THE CAR
JC Jebb

Thanks John for reaffirming the numbers. 2 pairs for a Y/YB and therefore it will be 6 (or 3 pairs) for a Y/T.

Can you confirm the bulb type from their site for Festoon trafficator bulbs please John?

Paul
Paul Barrow

Sorry Paul you are still not quite right the Y/YB takes 3 bulbs, 2 bulbe in the speedometer housing and 1 bulb in the petrol/ammeter/oil guage housing.
john

John

They only sell them in pairs dont they? So 3 bulbs is 2 PAIRS aka 4 bulbs?

Paul
Paul Barrow

no you can buy i bulb if you like. 2+1=3
saves you a little money the boast is they dont blow so you do not need a spare!!time will tell
John
JC Jebb

Thanks John for the clarification. I looked again at their website - it is confusing in that the drop downs only give 1 and 2 options so for a Y you would need to:
a) choose a quantity of 1 and a voltage selection of 12volt - AE1A, then click ADD TO CART, then from the cart window click Continue Shopping, go back to the previous page and select a quantity of 2 bulbs ... add to cart and then check out to get the price break.

If you are buying for a YT, simply select a quantity of 2, then on the cart page update the Quantity to 6 by over typing then click UPDATE prior to checking out.

Apparently all their prices shown on the website and in the cart are EXCLUDING UK VAT so if you live in the EU, VAT at the current rate (20% at the time of writing this) will be added when you check out after they have added shipping (which is also chargeable for VAT). If you live outside the EU VAT is 0% rated.

Sorry for the confusion folks!

What is the size of bulb for trafficator
E Winters

7mm with tapered ends the 6mm ones have a flat ends there is only the two to choose from.it replaces the festoon with tapered ends, it has small wings that jut through the 4abutments that normally hold the festoon in place. a couple of small things to watch when fitting these replacements they are a little slack and you need to check they are upright when you put the chromed cover on.second check should be made on wether there is any voltage drop in the trafficator due to oxidization ( you need to check the pushin connector where the cable goes in a the bottom of the trafficator usually bluey/greeny colour then the thin wire which goes to the bottom of the arm which ends in a sort of spring the bottom of the bulb sits in, usually very dark with oxy then inside the chrome cover where the bulb sits against it finally the area where the rounded ends of the chrome cover sit against the trafficator all these places must be clean to get a good voltage a check should also be made on how good the earth is between the trafficator metal base and the b post all items i have mentioned are normally missed or not checked or not bothered with.Hereby endeth this chapter and verse!!!!

Just ordered 10 dash bulbs (3 for my Y and 6 for my YT ... and 1 spare) and 2 7mm festoons for the Y trafficator signals. Look forward to getting them.

John, I see they are showing a Y instrument face on their site - yours??

I ordered my LED bulbs a month or so ago. I notice they sale solid state cutouts. Has anyone fitted one of these to there car?
c callaghan

Here comes a picture of the rear of the r/h section of a Y/T dash. It uses the same design as a TC, with one big instrument on the drivers side and one on the passenger's side and a centre-panel with all the small gauges and switches.
In the attached picture you can see the 2 twin holes that are used to fasten the bulb holders (approximately just below the centre-left and the centre-right right position of the Instrument cut-out).

Thanks for this thread, John - very interesting to hear that you can, in fact, find bulbs that allow you to see the instruments at night! This came as a shock to me after several decades of dimness when it comes to night driving.... however, I do wonder if the very "blue" light produced by an LED bulb, and evident from your excellent picture, compared to the comfortable yellowish light of a filament bulb, suits the interior of the car?

While I applaud John's great dexterity in fitting the new bulbs, I think I'll be sticking with old-style bulbs for the sake of appearance. Just my preference, of course: other readers may disagree.

(Does anyone remember the 1987 new-generation Jaguar XJ6 cars, which had the then very fashionable electronic display instruments? One American magazine described them as "like finding a Pac-Man game in a gentlemen's club": I tend to feel a bit the same about LEDs in a Y interior.)
Tim Griggs

An LED bulb uses far less current to power it than the equivalent filament bulb. Light intensity is far superior.

They are perfect for use as day running lights.

If your classic car has standard filament bulbs and you put it in the garage at night and happen to leave the sidelights on (we've all done it!) the battery will be flat in the morning and the car won't start.

If you have LED bulbs/light boards fitted and you leave them on all night your car will still start in the morning.

Here's a few examples of how little current an LED bulb or lightboard uses compared to a normal filament bulb.

6v 5w filament bulb uses o.85 amps (nearly 1 amp)

Our equivalent 6v 5w LED bulb/lightboard uses 0.025 amps

So, you would need to light FORTY 5w LED bulbs to use the same current as ONE 5w filament bulb.

A 6v 21w filament bulb uses 3.5 amps

Our equivalent 6v 21w LED bulb/lightboard uses 0.17o amps

So, you would need to light TWENTY 21w LED bulbs to use the same current as ONE filament bulb.

The average vintage or classic car uses:

2 x 5w sidelights

2 x 5w tail lights

2 x 5w dash panel lamps

Total current consumed by filament bulbs (6 x 0.85) - 5.1 amps

(5.1 whole amps)

Total current consumed by LED bulbs (6 x 0.025) - 0.15 amps

(less than one sixth of one amp)

Thought this might interest owners, not my work but the LED man

I just went to the «Classic Dynamo & Regulator Conversion» website to order their E10 LED Dashboard bulbs and I see that there are 2 intensities offered: 1-LED bulbs (brighter than a standard bulb) or 5-LED bulbs (extra bright).

Which one do you recommend?

And they are really compatible with our positive earth circuits?

Many thanks!
Gilles
Gilles Bachand

Giles,
I would not have thought you need the light output from a 5led bulb for a y type, if you look at the image on the first posting on this thread that is a y type dashboard in the dark and plenty bright enough.
John UMG624
JC Jebb

I understand the power and brightness argument re LED bulbs but I do agree with Tim that the intense bright silvery/blue light generated is alien to our period cars. I know LED technology has developed soft light output to make living environments more comfortable, would it be possible to filter LEDs to give a period glow but maintain brightness and longevity?
Richard Verrill

Just look for "warm white" LEDs. The web offers a lot them, especially from chinese manufacturers. You just have to care for the right polarity. A universal solution to this are T10 bulb holder, which they have to be "fitted". But do we want these modern modifications in our nice old cars, as mentioned above?
Walter Prechsl

A very useful link and site John. I fitted LEDs to the D Lamps somewhile back and they are excellent. Whilst I agree with Tim about the period green lights I do feel that to be able to truly see the instrument panel at night is essential.

I came back from the NEC on Sunday evening in my recently acquired TC and whilst the head lights were excellent the dash panel light could have been so much better. Similarly, the lights in the YT at night are not brilliant. So I have taken the plunge and ordered a set for both cars and will report back when they are fitted with an illustration of before and after!

I do feel that it is crucial not only to be seen by other drivers at night but also important that you can clearly see the instruments. At least if there is a casatrophic oil loss, sudden discharging or loss of water (where a gauge is fitted) then to be able to be aware of this on your instruments is a must.

Much appreciated thread.

Sincerely
Jerry
Jerry Birkbeck

Hi Jerry,
thinking about this instr/lighting. with the y/yb the bulb is actually inserted into the speedometer and also the inst/cluster so you do not need high output bulbs or leds, but with the yt with the bulb holders being a bit more remote you might need the higher output of the 5led bulbs to get a welllit display the only problem might be you and your passengers feet may be litup!!
John UMG624
JC Jebb

Hi All,
Just had a word with Peter at Classic Dynamo about doing a batch of dashboard led bulbs in warm white which should satisfy the people who are not that keen on the blueewhite light which the current led bulbs give out. one other thing the new 5 led bulbs he sells may not fit in the y/yb bulb holders as they are bigger but should be ok for yt with their free standing bulb holders.

Hi, I've got the LED panel lights from Classic Dynamo & Regulator Conversions, and whilst they are "alright" they don't seem as bright as the illustration by John Jebb. Is this because the output from the original filament lights is both axial (in line with the bulb axis) and radial (at right angles to the bulb axis) whilst the LED units are axial only?

As to colour, it is possible to fit a filter over the LED unit using the appropriate colour sweet wrapper from a "Quality Street" tin I've used this to convert white LED to Red
Dave
D P Jones

Hi Dave,
settings of modern cameras and it becomes clear that the camera sensor has a much higher dynamic range of vision in the dark than people do.thats the reason why your lights appear to be not quite a bright as my photo are,but looking at them through human eyes a couple of minutes ago they are 100% better than the candles that use to be there.
