MG MG Y Type - Y Tourer 4310

Hi all
I have been rebuilding a TD (on and off) for the past 40 years and decided I needed to get and drive a car with an XPAG engine, so today I purchased Y Tourer 4310.

I have been onto both MG Y websites and will in the next few days change details for this car.

The car is currently being checked over mechanically, and I will be posting requests for information in separate threads in the coming weeks.

If nothing major is found by the mechanics, I believe I can get the Y Tourer on the road in three months.

The car is in a good condition:
- is mostly complete
- engine has been rebuilt (engine is "Replacement engine # B 7630), but I am unsure if it has been started - see thread on TD BBS for photo
- needs some switches
- has a new wiring harness but nothing is connected
- needs 'D' tail/ brake/ number plate lights
- needs locks for spare tyre locker cover
- has no fabric hood, but frame and straps appear OK
- Upholstery is a satisfactory vinyl, but design is no where near original
- three year old tyres

cheers
Stuart

Seats.
A question. These seats hinged and don't appear to slide. Is this correct for a Y Tourer.

Engine - right hand side

I notice it has no oil filter, Carb over flows are plastic and no thermostat bypass.

Is the accelerator cable correct.

Car came with 2 pan cake filters

Firstly congratulations on your purchase and welcome to the wonderful world of MG Ys.

To answer your questions:
In your third post when you say the car came with NO OIL FILTER you mean no oil bath air filter right?? Presume so as you are on the right side of the engine (oil filter is on the left). The oil bath on YTs are the same as TD except that the base is slightly taller. The link pipe is the same as TD.
Carb linkage is the same as TD and I would ditch the plastic over flow pipes in favor of brass ones ASAP. I note that the left banjo is on either backwards or upside down too as the pipe to the right hand one should arch up not down! The throttle cable is completely wrong and again is the same as TD I believe.
Does it NOT have a thermostat ... or just no branch pipe? Again, this is the same as on a TD but the metal pipe for a Y/YT may be slightly different (NTG are a good source for these and if you go to their site you can see if they list the Y/YT/YB as a different part number to TD.

In your second post, the seats and all upholstery has clearly been redone at some stage. The driver seat should SLIDE and NOT HINGE just as both Y and YB seats do. The Passenger seat only is HINGED and it is adjustable somewhat for front/back position. Can you show pictures of the actual seat bases?

Hope this helps and if you need more assistance, please do not hesitate to email either myself or Tony Slattery or Richard Prior your Australian International Representatives - both are very familiar with YTs and will be enormous local help to you.

Best wishes,

Paul

Thank you for your reply. I will be in direct contact with Tony, late next week when has returned from the Perth Nat Meet.

By 'No oil filter', I mean there is no oil filter attached to the oil pump - see attached photo.

I have a 4/44 oil bath air filter, but no dual carb connector, so will run with pancake air filters for now. Is the 4/44 oil bath air cleaner, similar to the YT air cleaner?

You mention that the Carb linkage is the same as the TD. Is this from the pedal to carbs? If you look at the above photo you can see the accelerator cable coming out the top of bulkhead and going to a bracket between the carbs.

I will fit brass fuel overflow pipe to the card (like did for my TD)

I will take some photos of the seat bases and post them later today.

Photos of seat fronts and support legs and Drivers seat adjusted. Hinge / brackets circled. The brackets holding the seat frame to floor look like the brackets electricians use to attach elec. PVC pipes to walls.

I will look in my TD spare parts and see what Oil Filter parts I have. Does it matter if it the TC /early TD style or later TD style oil pump?

Drop me a note off line as I actually have a YT Air Cleaner.

The throttle cable should terminate on a block like this. Hopefully this picture shows you what you need to have.

I am not qualified on the differences between the oil pumps but look in your copy of Let there be Ys as Dave Lawrence covers them fairly comprehensively.

As to the seats - they look terrible! I have two front seat frames here that require attention - again, drop me a note off line.

Hi Stuart,
Welcome to Y ownership. I see your YT was last updated on our database in 2006 so we look forward to your latest update.
Having driven a TD and a YT I can tell you that although they have the same expag engine the driving experience does not compare, as the gearbox and suspension are very different. However I am sure you will really enjoy driving the YT.
Your car has obviously been restored without reference to original spec. I should just get it on the road and make the changes as and when you can.
