MG MG Y Type - Y-type and Minor

Just read Neil Cairns' letter in respect of the YA in the current issue of "Practical Classics."

Both cars featured the same steering rack? Is that right?

And both cars had Issigonis desgined IFS, although the YA used coil springs, and the Minor torsion bars.

Is there any parts commonality between the Minor IFS and the YA's? Is the Minor just a torsion bar adaptation of the YA suspension (if such a thing is possible?) Both use a lever arm damper as the upper wishbone, which is why I'm asking if the Minor suspension was a development of the YA's.

Full part interchangability has been thoroughly researched and is contained in our publication The Alternate Parts List available from the Regalia Sales priced £10 at www.mgytypes.org.

Peter, I am not sure what front end parts fit a Y, but I have just fitted my Y with Morris Minor 1000 rear dampers (as mine have gone past repairable stage) using an adaptor plate to match the differing mounting centres. Minor 1000 were the only dampers narrow enough to fit between the rear leaf spring and the chassis.

Some time ago I read an article about the easy fitting of the Minor 1000's complete 4.555 diff in a TC rear axle. Would that also be possible for the Y as the axles are similar? Has anyone tried.
Willem van der Veer

Does anyone have a copy of the article mentioned by Willem?
I just happen to have a Minor 4:55 diff. in my spares bin.
Thanks,

Scott; Go to the TABC register and then on to technical. They have the info for instlling these pumpkins in to the TC diff.

I heard a similar story about fitting the diff from a Riley 1.5 into a Minor 1000.

Scott,

To be more precise:

Can you PLEASE have a look if the dimensions (length, banjo-diameter etc.) of the Minor diff suit the Y?
I can buy a Minor diff but would be more comfortable if there's a chance of using it!
Willem van der Veer

If it is just a diff for a YA that someone is after - I have a couple spare.
Paul Barrow

No Paul,
It's the 4.55 diff we're after for more relaxed highway cruising; with the standard 5.143(?) at 70 mph the Y tends to get a little bit noisy

Thank you, all!

My Y is fine at 65,and not too bad at 67!!

The Riley 1.5 to Morris Minor swap is quite likely as the Riley and Wolseley 1500 were built on the Minor floor-pan, and I believe that both front and rear suspension were the same as the Minor. Thanks for the tip on using minor shock absorbers.

I took a 4.3 rear end out of my ZB Magnette, and replaced it with a 3.9. Yes I know the ZB is supposed to be 4.55, but this one is definitely a 4.3 installed by a PO. Question, will it fit in my YT? If it will, I'll keep it; otherwise, I'll sell it.

' Confess I haven't even looked. My YT is a basket-case, stored so I can't look under it right now. If anybody has a quick answer, thanks!

Allen Bachelder

Be sure to check the ratios if looking at Wolseley or riley as I believe a lot of these models came with a 3.7 diff to compensate for smalle dis wheels. 3.7:1 might be just a bit too much for a Y to pull.

Getting back to the morris 1000 steering rack on a morris it's behind the Axel on a MG it's in front so even if it will go on you would have a car that go's left when you steer right!
John

John,

What a dilemma: if the Minor-racks are usable in a Y, for a RHD Y you'd need a LHD drive Minor-rack and you don't have them but we on the Continent do, and if I wanted to convert to a LHD Y a RHD Minor-rack would be nice but we don't have them and you in Britain do.....

Together with my wife, I ones did a driving-test in a LHD-Mini on which they reversed the steering rack. So the "steerer" sat on the right and the "throttler" on the left and it went left when you steered right.... Good fun, but a fine recipe for a relationship-crisis too, if you're not careful!
