MG MG Y Type - Y Type boot handles - same as early mini handles?

Dear All

I am sure that I read somewhere that the lockable boot handle fitted to early minis is the same as that on a Y. Is this correct and if so over what period were they fitted?

I look forward to hearing from you hugely knowledgeable guys!

Waiting in anticipation.

This is true I fitted a Mini boot handle (vintage 1963 - 1965) to my YT. You do need however to remove the shaft from the Mini boot handle (it is too short) and replace it with the one from the Y Type. I think that I also replaced the escutcheon with the Mini one as well.

The great advantage of the Mini Boot Handle is that it wasn't manufactured from Mazak (Monkey Metal) and doesn't pit like the original.

Please don't tell the Concours Brigade.

Regards.

If I compare the handle on my car with the handle pictured in the link I would say they are pretty close but I think the Y handle is straighter at the ends (the Mini ones seem to be curved).

OK David, if you have first hand experience I believe you!

Willem is correct in that they are not absolutely identical; the Y handles is straighter at the ends. However, unless you see two together it would not be obvious.

I attach a photograph of the two so that they can be compared.

David.

Thanks David for this extra info, this way we can conclude they are a very acceptable alternative.

Good to know and TY for the photo David.

I downloaded a copy of the Alternate Parts List from the site the other week. Although mini is not mentioned as a source for these it did say Austin A35 and that they were Wilmot Breedon 9423EXL part number so it does not surprise me BMC used them somewhere else. I am going to write mini beside on my copy in case I ever need one.

Comment about the keeping of the bar is also helpful.

Interesting link and comments. I neeeded a replacement as the ignition key does not fit the boot lock and there is no key number that I can find.

The mini boot handle duly arrived from Classic Mini Spares - nice job and two keys. The base is not and exact fit so I may just replace the locking mechanism - work in hand as a core plug blew on the XPAW engine in my TA!

All the best
