MG MG Y Type - Y-Type Distributors
The Lucas part number for distributors fitted to the YT is different from that fitted to the YA. YT - 40162 YA - 40058 Can anyone shed any light on what the diffence in specification might be (apart from the cap)?. I would also like to find out what Dwell angle is correct for both of the above distributors. I wonder if the advance curve is different YT/YA ?. I am about to have a dsitributor rebuilt/re-mapped for modern fuel and would be pleased to discuss this with anyone else who has recently had this work done. What is the "correct" or accepted position for the distributor in the YT/YA - flat side aligned with engine (as best can be achieved at least) - photos please ?. |

Hi Tony Without getting too technical they have different advance power curves. Have you looked in the Technical Data section of the Technical Centre for the info on www.mgytypes.org? It is easier to time the dizzy if the flat side of the dizzy is adjacent to the engine - you can get more rotation. Paul |

Both are listed in this list, http://www.mgaroadster.co.uk/Technical_Information/lucas.pdf Ideally the curve for your car on modern fuels should be determined on a rolling road? |

Thanks for that link Willem. Like a lot of information on the net, that list is dubious and incomplete. It states the rotation is clockwise ?, and that these distributors were fitted to the MG 1.5 litre ?. While the maximum advance of 15 degrees is there, no information on rpm or any intermediate advance is included ?. I have used dyno's before, but there are difficulties finding operators now who can tune a car without a computer controlling the engine - most are not interested in such "dirty hands" work. I recently called upon Roadside Assistance for my YT - the mechanic was 29 years old and had never worked on a car with carburettors and points after he left training college - he had no idea how to diagnose the fault in the YT, he just wanted to have it towed away. I perservered and using his test equipment, was able to find the fault and get the car running again. |

The 40335A and fitted to the XPAW powered Wolseley 4/44 should be about the same as the 40058 from the YA? In the list it has more data, but I agree this is not a conclusive list. |

Tony If I manage,I add an old thread of 2004 by one Bud Kruger. At the time he responded to a request of "our" Y-owner Remo Peter, regarding advance curves of XPAGs. A lenghty conversation evolved back then. Maybe this is of any help to you. I have a question regarding the "different" YT-cap you mention: Is it the same as with a TC/TD, i.e. the black type where the plug leads procure at the top - or is it the brown type whith the cables procuring at its side? In case the upload does not work, let me know and I will forward by e-mail. Anton Piller, Switzerland ![]() |

Many thanks Anton, that is exactly what I was looking for on advance curves. I am sending away a distributor for re-building, and now with this information can select the one that needs re-building the most - rather than spend good money or a dizzy that is only slightly worn. It will be interesting to compare the re-profiled advance curve when the distributor returns from it's service. It does confirm there are more variations than just the cap (side entry V top entry). I will have to check my "Let there be Y's" to confirm which cap is correct for YT/YA. I can't reach the book where I am at the moment and the new DVD copy is still in the post - I can't wait to see it. Thanks again Anton. |

Tony Glad, I could be of any help. If you let me have your e-mail address, I forward the whole thread with its discussions of weights, ets. Please mail to: pea-mk@bluewin.ch Anton |
