MG MG Y Type - Y TYPE GEARBOX IDENTIFICATION
The chap who bought Y7207 (a Y not a YB) from me has asked if I can identify a gearbox that he has been given, supposedly for a Y type. He is computer illiterate so I offered to ask around. There are various numbers/letters on it given by the mechanic who has the box and who would fit it. SF231 on what is described as the top 22895 on the "lid" DA21803 22827 Can anyone help? And/or has someone a gearbox that they could photograph from various angles and email to me to pass on? The gearbox on Y7207 has one or more chipped teeth on the first motion shaft so first and reverse have an annoyong knock, but have had it for at least ten years, probably more. I have suggested that he lives with it rather than change to a replacement box that might itself have problems. Any views on this? Thanks Michael |

Micheal The best thing your guy could do is have his mechanic buy a copy of Let there be Ys. I dont have a picture of the gearbox per se but Let there be Ys has all the details you guy needs I think. Paul |

Richard/paul Thanks for your comments, However the problem is to decide if the gearbox is actually suitable for a Y rather than how to recondition it, however I will pass on the details of Klassc Transmissions, althogh the car is now in Ireland. Paul, will Let There Be Y's have the identifying numbers for the gearbox? Unfortunately, when I parted with Y7207 I sold my copy, but I will pass on details of the CD if it has the information. The idea of photographs was that they can be compared with the gearbox in question. What about my suggestion to leave the present gearbox alone, in case the replacement is as bad or worse - any views? Michael |

Hi Michael, Here's a picture of a YB gearbox. When I'm at home I'll scan the page(s) concerning the gearbox of the LTBY's you so kindly sold to me ;-). http://www.mgcars.org.uk/imgytr/specialys/yb0805/yb080530.jpg |

Somehow I can't get my scanner working but going on the info in LTBY's I would say that the 'box is probably from a YA. The SF231 number is in the range of the Saloon 'boxes as listed in LTBY's (SC143 to SK198). If correct the clutch fork shaft diameter should measure 5/8 inch. SJ337 was fitted to a YB with the SC2 engine that has the 8 inch clutch. The matching gearbox has a clutch fork shaft of 3/4 inch diameter (as opposed to the 5/8 inch with the 7 1/4 clutch that 'your' SF231 should also have). YT gearboxes have a TR-prefix, TD's are also in the T*-range and TF's are in the U*-range. TD/TF 'boxes have a short gear-lever on an extension and Y's just have a long lever straight into the 'box. Attached is a picture of my admittedly very dirty gearbox that is awaiting refurbishment.... ![]() |
