MG MG Y Type - Y Type halfshaft

Found this under the back of the bench during a major reorganisation of the garage.
Is it fit for further service? and if so, which side should it go? ;-}

Best Regards and a Happy New year to you all

David

Only suitable as a very large tent peg - do not use it in a Y-Type.

Just my opinion.

It may be useful as a Get You Home in that you may get part way but it looks like it is about to fail David.

David's question raises an interesting point though - the photo shows the spline wear on the upper edge if the halfshaft were placed on the driver's side. But is the wear on the splines inflicted on the upper side? I wondered this the other day when looking at two spare halfshafts, and not having stripped down a Y Type crown wheel and pinion to see how the assembly rotates internally. We never stop learning! John.

Is anyone able to confirm my suspicion (above) that the way to "side" used halfshafts is to look for the worn edge of spline, and install with the worn edge as the upper or "driven" edge? John.

The MG Octagon are in the process of having a number of half shafts manufactured.
When these are completed I will post the info on the Bulletin Board

That is excellent news Jerry. We have covered these before on this website and refer anyone who is wanting / needing to buy some of these (any one basically who does not have a pair of spare ones!) to http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/halfshaft.shtml as when the MG Octagon Car Club make these they do so only in batches so get them when and while you can!

Jerry, if people want to, is there a wait list they can go on at the MGOCC for these please and what sort of price range are we looking at?

US/Canadian owners:
Sadly at this time the MGOCC cannot sell into the US/Canada but I have asked Brian Rainbow (Chairman of the MGOCC) to look into possible ways around this. If there is interest from US/Canadian owners dont let this put you off expressing your interest to the MGOCC and let them know that as US/Canadian owner you want the MGOCC to continue to try to explore ways this can be achieved as currently we are very disadvantaged by NOT having access to this wonderful source of excellent value spares.

Would love to be able to buy a pair. Here in Canada we do not sue at the drop of a hat.

Agreed Frank, however unfortunately the UK Insurers do not quite see it that way! I would be willing to look into a US entity obtaining underwriting here in the US and for the parts to be transfer sold over to it and then onto the US/Canadian Customers however before I can do that I need the authorization of the MGOCC Board to make that exploratory move ... and thus far have not been able to obtain that either. However, I will continue to try to get that and then we can see if we can get that underwriting done here.

Paul that would be great if it could happen. There are other ways but do not wish to pay VAT on top of the cost.

Hi Paul

I don't think a price has been agreed yet. Hopefully they ought to be available this Spring. I suggest that if folk are interested in acquiring one or a pair that they e-mail Pete at the Octagon
(info@mgoctagoncarclub.com) with their request.
The more demand that we have the lower the price could be.

From recollection I believe that Octagon have ordered 20 pairs. I would have thought that the likelihood is that demand will certainly exceed that. As far as I am aware no-one else is supplying new half shafts at present and without them our cars wont run!

So I suggest that you e-mail Pete and this will give an indication of the demand.

You are of course absolutely right in your understanding of the 'embargo' on selling spares to the US/Canada. It would be handy if you could let us know how your investigations into local underwriting his going. I am afraid that with the small demand from the US/Canada that the costs of obtaining UK insurance are just too high to justify the expense. So it's back to you Paul!

Cheers

Jerry

Pretty much as I commented on above, before I can approach US underwriting I do need approval in principle for this to be looked into by the MGOCC Board. Brian Rainbow is well aware of this but there are higher priority chickens to fry before we get there at a Club level, so this is not an immediate thing. I merely mentioned it in passing so that US/Canadians are not taken by surprise that we cannot currently access these as direct imports are concerned.

As Frank points out though, using a roundabout solution and obtaining these as a secondary import is not practical unless we can find a way of eliminating the penalty of the (currently 20%) UK VAT on product and primary and secondary shipping.

I can't believe the MGOCC lawyers simply never explored the possibility of draughting an iron-clad liability discharge to be signed by a North-American client and which would conform to American and British law / jurisprudence. It is simply impossible that such a document can not be draughted!

IS THERE A LAWYER IN THE HOUSE?

Gilles Bachand

Be nice if such an animal existed Gilles but in the US and Canadian courts it would not hold any water.

If any readers of the BBS out there have a business in the US or Canada I would welcome talking with them and getting their liability insurance brokers into a conversation.
