MG MG Y Type - Y type novice questions

Hey all, is there a service manual and/or wiring diagram available for a right hand drive YT? Do all "Y" types have traficaters? Are all "Y" types rack & bpinion steering? Thanks, Tom
Thomas McNamara

Hi Tom

There is a workshop manual for the Y and the YB with a separate section in the Y manual for YTs. There is a wiring diagram in the manual for both RHD and LHD YTs. The greater majority of YTs of which 904 were manufactured were RHD. Trafficators were fitted to all Y Type saloons. None were fitted to the majority of YTs although a number were fitted to models exported to certain US states. These included a double filament bulb in the front sidelights and a combined red flasher and stop light on the rear which were located on the wings like TFs. All Ys had rack and pinion steering and the front suspension on the Y was continued in the TD, TF, MGA and MGB.
Hope this is of some use.

Firstly, congratulations on acquiring an MG YT. We wish you a very happy motoring experience with your YT and at the International MG Y Type Register you will find a bunch of very dedicated enthusiastic volunteers who are here to help you with that. The first step in you doing that will, if you have not done so already, is to go to www.mgytypes.org. Unlike some clubs, everything we have is free to all users with no fees, and that includes any additional help you may need to request from us personally using the Contact Us page if you so wish.

To answer your questions:
1. Yes - an on line version can be obtained from the Technical Centre sub-menu from the left navigation bar at www.mgytypes.org and then select Technical Data from the drop down options. Click on the link in the Technical Data page for Wiring and then select the file you want from there.
You may also wish to avail yourself of the manual CD for Ys and YT that we sell.

2. All Ys (aka YA and YB) have flip out trafficators (or did when they left the factory at least if not now!). The YT, unless it was a YT EX(U) was not fitted with ANY turn signals, although if you wish you can retro fit some - best to probably email me off line for a discussion on that though!

3. Yes, all Y, YB and all YTs were rack and pinion steering. In 1947 when the car was first introduced this was a revolutionary concept and the Series Y was one of the first PRODUCTION cars in the world to move away from the WORM GEAR or PEG type drives that had preceded it for steering systems.

Once again, Tom, welcome to the world of MG Y Types and we only request that you register your Y with us at our on line page (full address www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/registeryoury.shtml) however not doing so does not exclude you from any access to either any part of the website, nor from the expertise of our extensive world-wide network of International Representatives - I can usually find one of them who knows the answer ... if I do not!

Kind regards

Thanks guys,. I have restored a TC, TD, MGA and MGB but it appears that tech info on the "YT" is sparce. I am going to need seat covers, bonnet, bonnet frame, side curtains and seat foams right away. Is there a good supplier of such? Thanks, Tom (BTW, I'll join the registry after I taks delivery of the car and know the numbers). Reagards, Tom

Hi Tom

We have over 3gB of information on Ys on the website so, without wanting to over state it, we have a lot of information on the site! The problem sometimes encountered by people is finding a particular answer! The BBS also provides a fabulous wealth of information.

As to the other points of your email, I will respond off line to you.

Best wishes

Paul
