MG MG Y Type - Y-Type Owner's manual

I have an unused owner's manual for the MG Y-Type and I am curious whether it has any particular value. I bought it at a technical book shop in Melbourne around 1973 - I couldn't afford the car so I bought the book. It has been sitting on my bookshelf ever since. I don't have any current plan to sell it but wondered if I should be treating it as an item of value or if these are readily obtainable. I would appreciate any comment.

Vlaue depends on condition. A good condition one could fetch about $60US maybe, a poor one $20US.

Everything has a value, if you are serious about wanting a value can you send me a picture of it and I will let you know my thoughts. Particularly I am interested in the spine of the book. If you say the pages are clean and not doggeared I will take your word on that. I have about 4 of these myself, and a modern reprint for use in the workshop.

Thanks Paul, I won't bother with the photo as I don't realy plan to sell, I was just curious. The paper spine is intact, althought there are pressure marks from the the little metal latches that hold the pages.

You should now go out and find a car to fit it!

They are just as good as they look :-)

You are welcome Gary.

If you don't plan to sell they are priceless!
The illustrations are very good and because of the pleasantly readable text, I've read mine from front to cover. Very useful for a "bloody foreigner" to learn the jargon as used on this BBS.

I must admit that I have always loved the look of these cars - maybe I should look around and see whether I could now afford one. When I was young, everyone wanted a T-Type so maybe I was just being perverse but the Y-types always seemed a well balanced design, and of course somewhat more practical. I think it would be a very limited market now in Australia.

Now is always a good time to do anything - too late to do anything about times past, and no point in procrastinating about the future - it might never come!

Y's are very affordable and make great cars. However do your research at www.mgytypes.org - in the Reprinted Articles there are 3 Buyers Guides for instance, on the Technical Centre pages there is an article by Neil Cairns on Which Y is right for you, and there are tons more stuff there to help you.

Good luck

We bought a YT a year ago rather by accident and have never looked back. Admitedly we have owned a TF for 37 years on and off the road so we know the species quite well

There are several people across Australia who could help you in finding a YT or YA and then help in the appraisal. You only have to ask for help among Y owners and it's amazing where it comes from!

Email me if you want to take a purchase seriously.

If your manual covers the Y Tourer I would be interested in negotiating the possibility of arranging a copy, either paper or electronic.

I have a YT but no manual :-)

Mr. Robley - have you looked at the Book Review page at www.mgytypes.org? A cheaper option than photocopying this would be to purchase the reprinted version as sold by the MG Octagon Car Club. Details of this, and how to buy from them, can be found on that page.

What YT do you have - I have YT 4267 and YT 4455 and YA 5270.

Thanks for your response and separate email. I'll check out the reviews. I must admit I had looked, but obviously not closely, at that section of the website.

My car is YT 3432, currently undergoing restoration. At this stage, running gear is virtually finished, bodywork completed and just about to be painted. Then much chromework, upholstery and hood work follows whilst funding lasts :-) FWIW I've had the car since about 1962.

Hopefully this post shows my name as David! Mr is so not right.
