MG MG Y Type - Y Type wanted

I have been looking seriously for an MG Y Type in excellent or good condition and to the original specification for several months, so far without success, although I have looked at a few. The car must have current MOT so that I can drive it home. Originality is an important consideration as well as overall condition.
A car needing some restoration or repair work would be acceptable, subject to the price. Preferably, the car should be located in southern England, but I will consider a good car located anywhere in the UK. A fair price up to £9000 is available for the right car, consistent with its condition, although it will have to be near perfect for the maximum.

I owned a YB in the early 1970s. Now approaching retirement with more leisure time, I want another Y Type to enjoy. I can promise that a well loved car will continue to be well looked after, used considerately in good weather and cherished.

If you have or know of anyone with a Y Type for sale, now or potentially, I would appreciate an email - vectis#vodafoneemail.co.uk (replace the # with the usual @. This helps to avoid automatically generated spam replies.)

I think the only way that you are going to get what you want is to advertise. Try the MG Octagon Car Club's Bulletin. The cost is no more than a coupleof quid.It has a good circulation and is well read compared with this bulletin. When I advertised for a Y some years ago I had several replies.Perhaps limiting yourself to the south east is a problem. If people have access to e-mail they can send you some excellent pics through.

Hope this suggestion helps.

Thanks for this. At least you have read it!

I have current advertisements around on various classic car websites and in print. I have been offered several cars, but, so far, none has been the right one. I am also in contact with Jack Murray, the Y Registrar, who has proved very helpful, but, so far, has not been able to find a suitable car.

I have applied for membership of the Octagon Car Club, and I will advertise in the Journal as soon as I have the necessary contact details.

Your problem will be that many Y Type owners will keep their cars until they fall of their perch. Those that come up for sale are often part-finished restorations, or ones in need of a lot of work. Come along to the Spring Run as that is the biggest gathering of Ys any year. Be warned that £5000 will buy a decent car that will still need some work. Alas it is easy to make a £2000 one look like a £5000 one. As Jerry says the Octagon CC seems to get the most adverts. If you do buy one and have it fully professionally restored, it will still only be worth half the cost of the restoration ( currently about £16,000- then only worth £8000.)

Is Neil referring to the car falling off it's perch,
or to the owner ?
( we're not able to think outside the box over here! )

Depends who is the oldest...

Have a look at the link that Dave Mullen has mentioned.
There is a note on ebay which says 'buy this car for £5,800'

Perhaps you have already followed this up.

Thanks for this. I was aware of the YB for sale before it went on ebay, and I had some photographs. In my opinion, the car was not worth nearly £6000, particularly in view of Neil Cairns's comments above. Maybe I am being too fussy or expecting the impossible. I have looked at several cars in the metal and many others in photographs, ay varying asking prices. So far, none has really tempted me to part with my cash. I believe that I will know the right car when it comes along, although I may be in for a long wait. I have been looking seriously since last July. I am encouraged by tips and messages from other owners.

There's an interesting 1951 YA Reg KKV 462 on Classic and Sports Car Centre. They are asking £8450 for it. Whether its worth that much who knows.
