MG MG Y Type - Y Types in Action
Last Sunday the MGCC in Melbourne ran their annual Rob Roy historic Hillclimb about 35 miles out of town.
The Hillclimb is the second oldest purpose built Hillclimb in the world starting in 1938. It was destroyed by fire in the early 1960s but the Club resurrected it in the early 1990s. We recently undertook a major $1M plus redevelopment. Would you believe a total of 4 Ys competed, one of which was double entered Not for the pruists 3 were specials with light weight bodies and much larger engines fitted and a salon with major mods. No 43 in Red had a TD body on it and featured MGB running gear. No 92 / 94 in Black had a 3300 ccs Holden 6 cylinder motor and featured what looks like a Riley grille. No 118 in Maroon retained its sedan body but featured MGB running gear and big tyres etc. No 441 in Aluminium had a local BMC " Blue Streak " 6 cylinder motor of 2498 ccs. Basically a B series with 2 extra cylinders. A prototype MGB was constructed in Sydney in the mid 1960s with this motor as a possible power unit for the MGC but rejected by Abingdon. The motor was used in Austins and Woseleys in Australia Times where as follows 43 - 30.25sec 92 - 27.80 94 - 29.11 118 - 30.56 441 - 29.42 Reasonable times by all concerned. It is definitely a power climb. More photos by seperate posts as I don't know how to load extras. cheers Ian ![]() ![]() |

Thanks Ian - we have both of those so if you can locate the chassis numbers of the other two sometime that would be great. |
