MG MG Y Type - YA dashboard mount
Hello, I am currently refurbishing my YA dasboard. While doing this, I noticed 2 bores at the lower edge, below the glove box. The main fixation of the dashboard to the body are the 4 boltholes at left and right side. Is there an additional fixation from the lower edge, ie. one or more flat irons going to the scuttle? Thanks for answer in advance. Walter |

Walter Can you upload a picture of what you are looking at so that we can be very clear? Thank you Paul |

you are right Paul, I attached 2 photos, showing the dashboard from underneath, with marked holes. Walter ![]() |

Thanks Walter. I can confirm to you that these are not original holes. Looks possibly like someone at some stage may have hung a radio from underneath the glove box, or some similar ancillary equipment, at some time in the past. You can go ahead and fill them as part of your restoration. Paul |

Thanks Paul, IŽll fill the holes. regards Walter |

Hi walter, my dashboard had exactly the same holes, there was a small screw through each hinge with a nut screwed on it from underneath,to me it looked like original from the factory, maybe on some cars the small wood screws for the hinges were pulling out so a stronger solution would be a screw and a nut underneath, hope this helps Graham [with mg 5670 nearly back on the road after 40 years |

walter, those holes are for the nut and bolt that goes in the top hole of the hinge, if you look there are three holes in the hinge in a triangle shape as i have said the top one is bolted. John UMG624 |

walter, The nut size is 8BA with great care an 8BA box spanner goes up the hole a little tight but it will go, ive just tried it on my mg John UMG624 |

Thanks for the update. When I understand correctly, the hinges have 3 holes to the dashboard, 2 wood screws and 1 bolt with nut? So I should not use my little stabdard hinges from the hardware store instead special ones? Can somebody please send me a photo to see one hinge at the open flap? Thanks Walter |

Hi All, I am wrong saying you can undo nut with box spanner, it would appear the nut is rammed down the hole and the wood holds it, sorry if i mislead you. john UMG624 |

Hi All Last post on this subject by me else you will all be getting annoyed. having examined a spare dash board it would appear that the NUT is actually a short threaded sleeve trapped between the dashboard and the screwed and glued reinforcing strip below the glove box,if the screw and sleeve rust together you have a job on your hands to remove the hinge. the spare i have has suffered with this same problem which i am addressing in the coming days if anyone wants to know how i got on please ask. Hi All, i was right the first time it is a nut,but 4BA not 8BA and it was just trapped in the wood, I cut the head off with a modeling drill and burr and with a very small punch knocked it out of the dashboard.I would not put replacment bolts in the same way as abingdon did. John UMG624 ![]() |

Having now been able to review several original sources of dashboards (mine is a modern replica replacement) I am in agreement that the securing of the glove box lid was highly likely to have been (in each hinge) 2 brass wood screws into the lower dash panel and one longer screw bolt with both a nut and a washer (probably) recessed up into the wood of the dash so as not to cause a snag hazard to passengers. Great query Walter and another mystery put to rest! Best wishes Paul |
