MG MG Y Type - YA door hinges.
I'm trial-fitting door hinges, and of course find that there's more than one way they could be oriented - so am seeking confirmation.
(1) With the tapping plates that press into the centre pillar: Am I right in thinking that the round lug should be at the bottom (for both top and bottom plates), to provide maximum support for the weight of the door? If so, this would then govern the orientation of the front door hinge, to have its lug at the top, and the wider (curved) section of hinge extension also at the top. Photo 1 shows my unstripped rear LHS door with tapping plate and front door hinge, loosely fixed as described above. Photo 2 shows the same assembly from above. It looks right and operates as it should, but I'd appreciate being corrected if not! (2) I notice numbers stamped on the back of the hinges, but not the tapping plate. (eg - M 558) These numbers may be a clue, because the M seems to be placed at the top, when I think the hinges are correctly oriented - or it might be coincidence. All advice gratefully received ... Hi John, Only thing not right is flat washer under spring you need a tabbed washer or a (lock nut) there which bends down to stop the nut unscrewing over time. John YB0362 |

It turns out that, at least in the case of Y3348, the door hinges are numbered in some kind of order; I guess so that at the hinge manufacturer's premises, they could be stored and retrieved easily. Thus in the case of my car:
Top hinges: 557 R/H Front 558 R/H Rear 559 L/H Front 560 L/H Rear Bottom hinges: 561 R/H front 562 R/H rear 563 L/H front 564 L/H rear. I couldn't find this info in the archives, so have put it here in case it's useful to anyone trying to find replacement hinges, or just make sense of what they have! Regards, John. |
