MG MG Y Type - YA rear spring assembly
Having just assembled rear springs, back axle and (rebuilt)original shocks, I had a panic moment : did I put all the spring leaves in the right orientation before clamping and refitting to the chassis? Checking the workshop manual,(p viii) I see that the leaves are offset - short measurements to what I THINK is the front. Also, the circular ends are of differing diameter - again, I think the smaller measurement is at the front end (.855"). All checked and ready to be assembled again, but can anyone confirm that my reading of the manual is correct - shorter leaf measurement to the front? My manual doesn't seem to make this clear. Am holding breath. Regards, John Hall. |

Hi John Yes, the shorter end I believe DOES go forward of the axle mainly because when you get two fatties in the back or a truck (boot to you guys as I am becoming more Americanized!) load of junk the spring needs to support more load rearward of the axle. Any way, you are on the right track I believe - I also took a quick look under my YA too. Paul |

Hi John You are welcome. Because of our privacy policy I am unable to advise on any of our members' personal details. I am sure if Neil, or any of our UK members currently restoring a Y, sees this though he will contact you direct. Have a safe trip Paul |
