MG MG Y Type - YA REAR WHEEL BEARING

I have found some play in the rear wheel bearing on my YA, if you grab the wheel both sides then push and pull I can feel and hear a clunk, but if I push the top of the wheel and pull the bottom (rocking) there is no play.
Not sure if this is the way that bearings show wear in rear axles, but looking at the Octagon web site I can choose between a normal bearing, sealed bearing or heavy duty wheel bearing.
Has any one got any experience of using any of these wheel bearings as I need to choose one. the sealed bearing is about £5 more than the standard one and the heavy duty is double the price.

A couple of years ago I had leakage into the rear brake drums. Roger Furneaux in the UK sells all the bits to cure that sort of a leak for the TC so tried it on the YT. It doesn't work the same way because of the hub. Used a sealed bearing and so far with about 3000 miles no further leaks. Terry

Because the half-shaft supports the wheel right back to the diff carrier, it is hard to get any top-bottom wheel play, ( as you do on front wheels.) You are trying to pivot the wheel about a centre 2 feet away. You have found the correct way to check it, pull it in and out of the axle.

The normal bearing with a separate seal is cheaper. If you fit a sealed bearing, the old seal will burn out as it gets no lubrication.

For YB owners, your axle is completely different.

Thanks Neil, Terry for your comments.
I also found the Y is wandering all over the road a bit more than usual(a lot more) possibly a bit of rear stearing, so I hope when I have renewed the bearings that it will improve.
One more point,
I have checked the half shaft and on the spline theres an 1/8" twist is any twist acceptable?
I do have one spare, but I have not checked the other side yet!
Steve Randle

Any amount of twist is acceptable - what I found unacceptable was when mine snapped! Steve if I were you I would just be aware of the wear and try to ensure smooth release of the clutch rather than Grand Prix style driving - I think that was what broke mine!

If I lived in the UK and had any problem with the rear axle I would talk to Roger Furneaux. He(also others independently) developed a solution to the chronic rear axle problems of the TC. The TC and YA/T axles are the same design. Some of the parts I got from Roger were used on my Y eg the lip seal. Rear axle repair is way beyond my capabilities and it was a couple of years ago so memory fades but as I recall it the Nut that Roger has developed to replace the original nut common to both the TC and the Y will not work on the Y as it is too deep. You can't bolt the hub to the flange. So used the original nut. Can't remember now whether I got the sealed bearings from Roger but I think he recomends them and uses them in his fix. Terry
