MG MG Y Type - YA tyres

The question is, are radial tyres fitted with inner tubes or sans tubes on YA wheels, and is over £100 plus VAT for each tyre the going price? I suppose they are rated for over 120mph [chance would be a fine thing]! Bryan

No idea on current price, Bryan but wouldnt be surprised now that VAT is 20% over there.

Given the age and style of the Y and Y/T wheels I would not recommend anything other than tubes as the rims are not designed for bead sealing ... and that is before considering their possible condition for out of round causing sealing problems.

If you search the internet you can find 175/80x16 taxi tyres fitted for £70.90 inc. VAt from etyres.co.uk, and on ebay , same size £49.95 delivered free if you can arrrange the fitting.

Good luck

Bryan,

Do you mean the Michelin X 84H TT 5.50x16? If not, I'm curious if there are other radials for the Y.

I would fit inner tubes for the same reasons as Paul says.

In the Netherlands that Michelin costs EUR 175,- excl. 19% VAT (look at: http://www.oldtimerbv.nl/tableaux/index.php?pageId=114&itemId=617), so GBP 100,- would be a good price.

I need to replace the old front tyres and would dearly love to buy 4 Michelin radials but forking out EUR 1.000,- for 4 tyres is a bit too much for me, so I'll buy 2 additional Dunlops.

I may be in a minority here, but does anyone else find the look of radials on a Y a bit strange? There's something about the profile of a nice narrow 1940s-style cross-ply that suits the car's appearance: radials look a bit heavy.

I know there are safety arguments in favour of radials, but as the chassis is pure 1938 and the brakes pure 1936, I'm not sure the car should be subjected to the higher cornering forces radials allow anyway - not that Bryan will be opposite-locking his car any time soon, I'm sure :-)

Willem One problem I came across when purchasing tyres for the 53 TF is that one needs to consider that tyres for these cars seem to be manufactured in batches one size each year. I purchased 3 tyres in one year but the following year I could only get 2 of larger sections. It was either that and fit them on one axle or a MOT failure. So perhaps it may be prudent to buy all 4 in one expensive go. One other cautionary tale is purchasing tyres which look OK but are of old stock as happened to a very unfortunate MGB owner who is no longer with us. Bryan

A kind soul whose name I have forgotten I'm afraid put a note on the BBS some while ago that ATS were offering the 16" taxi tyres at 25% off. i.e. 4 for the price of 3. I bought the 5th one at their normal price just before VAT went up. It cost me £91.91 + disposal of the old tyre £1.28 + balance £0.51 + tube £5.45 these all ex VAT prices
The tyres are labelled 'Michelin 175R 16C XC4S 98/96Q'
They look pretty chunky and are heavy so I do hope they are going to be OK as my car is still off the road so I haven't tried them.

I have fitted Avon radials and tubes to my car. 165/80-16. Expensive and hard to get. (I hope they are not the reason for the vibration I have just written about in this column!)And of course, the spare remains a cross ply. Leigh Wallace, Melbourne, Australia.
