MG MG Y Type - YA wheel brace /wrench
Hi All So I had a couple of hours to spare and fitted the new set of clips to the tool tray in the well at the back, and after many years with the tools in a bag in the boot I find I have the wrong pattern wheel brace, fits the wheel nuts but wont fit into the clips ! So does anyone have a spare one for sale please? Just thought I would ask on here before I start trawling the internet. John B |

So now I have been on the forum archive and had a look on the internet I realise what my chances are of obtaining a wheel brace for a YA , and it has to be said they aint good . I didnt realise the situation when i put the previous post on . Still you have to be an optimist to restore a Y type ......... Stay safe folks John B |

Will have a dig in the shed. Have a few odd wheel braces but how do I tell if one is from a Y? Guess I just take a photo and see if it gets recognised? Bob Schapel South Australia |

A drawing of the overall dimensions and features will help with identifying an original wheel brace. I'll see what I can do while the footy final is on tonight !. Safety Fast Tony Slattery The Classic Workshop |

Thanks Tony and Bob, Be very interested to see what you come up with . Might be the best i can come up with is to forge one so at least it fits in the clips . Looks about 1/2ins dia steel bar to me? Cheers John B |

Hi Guys, Thanks for those photos. Rob's is the right one with the flare on the end. Don't know about the maker's name .Worth checking the socket size because the YA and YB differ I believe? Not sure what the sizes are off the top of my head . Cheers John B |

Bob The depth of the spinner handle is a bit deeper than the usual one - see Rob's photo. See also https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/toolkit1.shtml and https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/toolkit2.shtml - both accessible (along with many other goodies) from the list of downloadables and extra pages on the side of the NEWS page https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/news/news.shtml Paul |

What is the nut size? The brace in the image would suit nuts which are about 18 or 18.5 mm across the flats. It also lacks the second swivel, so is probably not Y-Type. Bob Schapel ![]() |

Bob Not sure yet of the socket size for a YA, but the YA brace is about 7" from the socket to the first bend so it looks stretched in comparison to a lot of others . Don't take the 7" as gospel true its just a judgement when I was looking at a photo. Will try and find the socket size . John B |

Ian Well spotted ,looks like the right one and confirms my thoughts of a 3/8 whit socket head. I shall keep an eye on that and see if I can get it for a reasonable amount . Thank you John B |

Ian Thanks again for passing on that info . I am the proud owner of a proper YA wheel brace for sensible money. Onward and upward with the resto John B |

Ian Do you use the one on https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/searchebay.shtml too? Paul |

I have tried it Paul but am put off by the fact that it throws up items in foreign languages and currencies even when I apply the filters to UK only. Ian |
