MG MG Y Type - YB 1466 has arrived!

YB 1466 has arrived in the U.S., 8 months after purchasing her in London from the original owner. Only 44,000 miles on her-looks like she's wearing her original Dunlops and the treads on the spare are like new. The Jackall handle and the lug wrench are in place, too. Needs only some gas and a battery to run.
I will have plenty of questions that need answers in the next few weeks.

Wow, great find! Congratulations!
Steve Simmons

Looking forward to some photos - should be good for us YB owners to see the original layouts etc. Great news.
David Mullen

Congratulations on the arrival. Like haveing an new baby.
Only concern is I hope you are not planning to drive on those old Dunlops.
Read in a recent MGCC mag what can happen using old tires.
Frank Russell

Which reminds me to ask - my YB is fitted with good tyres but the inner tubes are at least 30 years old - firstly should there be some sort of strip between the tube and inside of wheel (like on a bike) and I presume after 30 years the tubes should be replaced?
David Mullen

Dave-
I would replace the tubes. When I re-shod my TD (w/tubes) and had a flat soon after, my regular tire guy said to be sure the inner surface of the tires were smooth, as sometimes there are manufacturing nubs on the modern tires, which can chafe and puncture the tubes.

Scott,
That really sounds like a very nice car to have. Congratulations.

Dave,
I would replace the inner tubes too if they are that old. The risk of destroying a good tyre is to big.
The strip on a bike is to protect the inner tube from the chafed spoke heads, so unless you decided to fit spoked wheels, I agree with Paul G that it is only neccesary to have smooth inner rims. If you have the time, have the tyres removed and then repaint the rim inside with a good rustrepellant paint and let dry for a week (or send SWMBO for some shopping and bake of the rims in the oven for half an hour at 85 degrees C.....)

Wheels can get surprisingly rusty inside the tyre if you blast your tyres with a high pressure cleaner frequently (don't ask how I know that)

I have discovered that one of the Golden Rules of Existence is: "Replace All That Is Rubber Every Quarter Century". Since then I have lead a happier and more productive life.
Gilles Bachand

Thanks for the input. I will get some new Inner Tubes - it's just daft to take a chance with safety - I can't complain they have been on the car for 30 years - 28 of them with me! Funny how this thread got me thinking of tyres!
David Mullen

On re-reading Paul's entry I see that Paul refers to the inner surface of the TYRES, whereas I was thinking of the RIMS. Of course both are important.

For the YB and TD radial tyres can be used and there used to be radial tires of the "tube type". They where smooth inside to prevent chafing the inner tube.
I doubt that there are new modern radials with that "tube type" on the sidewall, but sharp edges should/could be sanded before fitting??
Willem van der Veer

Willem-

Correct, I was referencing the tires/tyres themselves. The inner band fitted to the wheels, was generally to prevent the ends of the spokes on wire wheels from chaffing the tubes. As modern passenger tyres do not normally have tubes, that element of the inner construction is no longer a big consideration for QC.

Scott...Maybe you can help me find some parts close by...for my Y...My mechanic talked to someone at Moss who indicated he didn't have any Y parts unless he knew another description of an MG that shares the same parts...As follows:Wheel cylinders and fron shoes, Master cylinder, front brske hoses...Thanks for any input. Hi Marvin,

If money is no object, search no further. Send C&C Parts in Holland a request and they should answer.

The brake cilinders they make are works of art; bronze housing with stainless steel pistons. The stuff archeologists dig up long after the rest of the car is gone....

Yes Marvin, Moss Motors know very little if anything about Ys since Al Moss sold the business. However, as Willem says, C&C are a vendor we have heard nothing but good about and they will certainly sort you out on the Master Cylinder.

As to the wheel cylinders, YA/T also used on Morris 10 Series M and 12 Series III and on the Wolseley 10, Lockheed BA4. Rear YA/T are MG TC fronts. I beleive NTG lists them.

A good investment for $20 (£10) is the Alternate Parts Listing available through Regalia Sales - it lists many compatible parts which widens your search options.

Paul..You have recommended Regalia Sales a few times in a positive manner and I would like to go to the sie and pick some items but for some reason I can't access the site..I also tried to access NTG and it came back as not a valid address that I used...I especially appreciate your suggestion of the Alternate parts list which I think is an utmost neccesity for anyone who needs alder and scarce parts..Thanks again for all your help...Marvin

Paul is referring to Regalia Sales of the MG Y Register. If you go to the website www.mgytypes.org and select Regalia you will find the Alternate Parts List and many other 'hard to get' items.

The latest addition to the range will be window carriers for all doors of the Y Type Saloon. At long last we have managed to have some of these manufactured to the original (actually better than) specification.

Regards.

David.

NTG have recently changed their website - and their web address! Try https://mgbits.com/

I do hope that no-one is actually running their Y's on tyres even as old as 10 years! If you are then for goodness sake get them chnaged. There was a case of a guy who rebuilt an MGB a couple of years ago.He replaced everything but kept the tyres on as their were 'as new' - except of course they were probably the original. Very sadly on his way to an event he had a blow out and was killed. So just dont risk it.

BRAKE CYLINDERS

I have a set of bronze front ( I need to check ) brake cylinders from a TA/B/C as new. Any interest then contact me off line to agree a price. Just let me check if they are front or rear!

Sincerely

I completely agree with Jerry on replacement of tyres: there has been a lot of classic-car press recently about the dangers of old tyres. This is personal to me: a friend bought a wonderful time-capsule Renault Dauphine a while ago, complete with time-capsule 1959 tyres, one of which burst at 50mph shortly afterwards. Luckily he and the car survived the resulting accident.

There is a coding system on UK and European manufactured tyres, which pins the manufacturing date down to week and year. This has operated since the 1990s. If you consult the UK magazine Practical Classics there is a piece in this month's issue. (When I decoded the Avons on my Y, I found they were probably two years old by the time I bought them!).

I'm sure there must be a similar system on US-made tyres (tires)?

Scott, you might like to keep the YB's Dunlops as period exhibits in your garage, but please - don't use them on the road. Look forward to the pics!

Thanks for all your advice and concern, but I have no intention of using the old tyres. I'll probably keep them mounted for show and have new ones on another set of wheels for use.
I will need to replace the windscreen seal and bonnet corners, but all the other body rubber looks good. What about sway bar bushings? Are those available?
