MG MG Y Type - YB DRAUGHT EXCLUDER & LACE TRIM

I am currently restoring YB 0279. The next phase of my restoration is to attach the draught excluder and covering lace to the body shell. I would be grateful for any advice on the best method to complete this task.

Thank-you

Hi John

In two parts:

Draught excluder - I presume you mean the stuf round the doors? Woolies are your people, and you require items R123 & 306 (no R) see their website from our links page.

Covering lace - do you mean the bobble stuff that goes over the tops of the doors and round the inside of the roof line and over the top, side to side, behind the sunroof recess? If you do, Paul Beck is your man for the Rubber extrusion (see website & email him) and W M Collingburn (no website but phone number on links page) for the bobble lace.

Good Luck,

Paul

Hi John; According to David Lawrence the draft excluder (rubber ) was the same for Y A/B &T. The lace covering which was glued to the rubber was dyed interior colour on the YT but left beige on the others regardless of interior colour. In my 1999 rebuild I got the rubber and lace from NTG. It looks the same as the fragments of the original I had left from my 70's rebuild but on fiting it I find that the door is not as good a fit as it was without the excluder. Too thick? But I don't have anything nearby to compare.Terry

The stuff supplied by Woolies was an exact fit for my car on the rubber. NTG may have a different extrusion I do not know. The covering probably came from Woolies though Terry.

The only supplier of the B extrusion for the coaching (bobble) hidem lace Paul Beck - he had the stuff especially made up for me and had a who lot done. Equally, the only manufacturer of the actual lace trim is W M Collingburn, again these were probably obtained, marked up and resold to you.

I would strongly encourage people to use the front line suppliers - it will eliminate a) much cost, and b) much time delay to do so.

Paul: Point taken and in fact that is what I am trying to do with my TC restoration. In 1999 I was a computer/internet novice, the Y site did not exist and this site was barebones. Even now some of the specialist suppliers do not have web sites or email. So in 1999 for Y
parts at this distance NTG was the best convenient source
and could well be still.Witout NTG from the early 70's till now I couldn't have kept my car going at least as an original vehicle.
The real difference as compared to the 70's is with the net and email I can get something in a week or two as compared to 3-6 months and usually know what you are getting. Terry

Hello John,
Paul is correct with regard to the draught proofing around the doors. It comes in two seperate parts, R123 being the rubber extrusion and the other part (the material covering that goes over the top of the rubber) is number 306.
I got mine from Paul Beck - in those days he was cheaper than Woolies and you need quite a few feet of the stuff.
I differ from Terry in that I did not find it necessary to glue the covering to the rubber. Both parts are tacked together into the straw like material that runs in the channel around the inside edge of the door frame. The material covering (which as Terry says should be beige) will then fold aroung the rubber and is held in place by the rubber.

I'm a bit late on this; two points:
The draught excluding on my Y was NOT straw colour but a mild sort of bright Brown and I do have what I took out to prove it! I decided to dye the material supplied by the well known firm and I'm glad I did. Very worried that so many people have thought not to do this. I must say that I cannot see how you can fix the material and extrusion to the body without glueing the two bendy bits together before fixing to the door openings. Its a pig anyway.

On the hidem banding. I have a friend who has the design which is embroidered on the tape of the Y in his computer which is linked to a sewing machine. He dyed the tape that I supplied and bought the matching thread and bingo. You do need quite a lenth! I can put you in touch. P S the tape needs to be stuck to the extrusion with BLACK mastic (I don't know why but I have a container of Clear and one of White with one squeeze out of each if you want them).
