I have noticed several Y Types for sale currently - I can't help wondering why. When I was looking for one in 2008/9, they were like hens' teeth.
I did read recently that classic car values have fallen recently, the main reason given being that suitably skilled mechanics to maintain them are no longer readily available. I found this hard to believe because, although I have no proper training, I find the Y Type easy to maintain. All that is needed is a decent set of spanners, plus a few other tools. The necessary knowledge is readily available on this website and elsewhere, and spares are relatively easily obtained. I wonder if it is a panic reaction following the Government's stated intention to stop the sale of petrol cars by 2040. In my opinion, this is just hot air from the green lobby. Currently, the UK does not have the infrastructure or generating capacity to support this policy. Given the time that the latest nuclear power station has been in the planning stage, still with no firm commitment to go ahead, I cannot see how things will improve significantly by 2040. I am sure that petrol will be readily available for as long as I need it! Maybe a few more windmills and solar panels will be enough. Mike |

One of the reasons that there are several Y-types available is that the elderly owners are finally selling them after an ownership of decades? |

It went for £9250, My own feeling were with the paint and wire wheels it looked very old fashioned car, I noticed the Jackall pump was missing ?. The reg number was UMG625 one up from mine UMG624 , the chassis no YB0346 was earlier than mine (YB0362) but engine was later?? At 17232 mine is 17190, it was also registered later on the 10/03/52 mine was 07/03/52. John YB0362 |

Yes works out at £10,138 with buyers premium.
I find it fascinating John that you feel 'with the paint and wire wheels it looked (a)very old fashioned car'. The Y Type is an old fashioned car in that it was originally designed 78 years ago (1939)! The wire wheels and two tone colour suggest a more modern feeling and perhaps fit in with the ethos of the MG Car Company who in their advertising blurb described the Y as a 'sporting saloon'. Of course each to their own. I take the view that the Y/YT's look great with wires (even more so with s/steel finshes)! The duo tone colour on this car is not quite so appealing. On aesthetics I do find that the solid wheels of the Y matched with body colour. especially black, create a visually 'heavy appearance'. Which can be offset by having steel coloured wheels! Jerry, I agree with you, in that the choice of two tone colour is not so appealing, nor do I find a solid black to my liking. Solid colours just don't seem to have that je ne sais quoi. I do prefer two tone colours, despite not liking the car's colours that sold at auction. Silly though it sounds, I paid much more for my strawberries and cream two tone with coach stripe than the auctioned car realised, yet I have no regrets. Possibly because the mileage on my car was an authenticated 15K miles. |
