MG MG Y Type - YB Seat Belts
I would like some advise on fitting Front seat belts to a 1953 MG YB. Has anyone any recommendations as to fittings and Type. |

Morning,
Personally I think seat belts in an old car like Y Type are a false sense of security, as the anchor points and other features of the car are also less safe than modern cars i.e. don't have crumple zones, and the Y still has a big steel steering column that would cause the driver some discomfort etc in event of crash. The best advice I feel is drive the car in accordance to it's design i.e. not too fast, stick to rural country roads and drive with lots of anticipation keeping nice safe distance. If however you wish to pursue the fitting of belts there are a couple of archive threads on the BBS just search using "seat belts" and there is the link on the IMGYTR too. https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/seatbelts.shtml Good luck with thatever you decide. Hi look at post 698
https://www.mgexp.com/forum/t-series-and-prewar-forum.46/mg-ya-no-1675-from-1948.4022768/page-47 there you can see the plate at the b column you can t see anything if you hav not fit the belts, if you want to you can it in some minutes at this point on the ground i have made a special metal construction what is not weld to the chassis. i can take it away also why seat belts i drive the car slowly and carefully never made an accident until today when i hit something with 30 km it is different as 100 km with a modern car with the belts i would not hit the windscreen in the front and my teeth will not be destroid. i can make some pictures from the parts on the ground if you make a restauration from your car you should see my blog with more than 1000 pictures |

It is worth giving Quickfit Seat Belt Service technical dept a ring. Nothing to do with a similar sounding national tyre and exhaust chain, but really helpful and experienced in making their own belts in house and fitting kits for old cars and will do installation too. See: https://www.quickfitsbs.com/classic_cars_seatbelts.php They made me some excellent three point static belts (‘period style static lap and diagonals’) for my MkII Austin Healey Sprite which has an unusual two bolt rear mounting for the upper point which they could supply the correct component as part of the belt. They also do lap belts and inertia reels. They have experience of fitting belts into old cars that never had them as standard including working out how to insert/create suitable mounting points.
