MG MG Y Type - YB tyres

I am in the process of rebuilding 0251. Can anyone recommend a good tyre to replace the existing old cross ply. Also I am looking for an interior light can any one help ?
K Buckley

Welcome, and good luck with the rebuild.

Try Vintage Tyres at Beaulieu, Hampshire based on grounds of the national motor museum.

I may have an extra interior light. Won't be able to check until later in the week. I'll try to contact you later to see if you have found one. Thanks. Larry

Absolutely Vintage Tyres - see Links page.

I too have both interior light and switch - drop me a note off line using the email link.

Hi , not sure from your text is it cross ply or radial you want but if its cross ply i took my rims to longstone tyres @ Bawtry yorkshire and had 4 Avon tourist fitted while i waited, fitter did a super job while i whatched, hpe this helps Graham

I agree with you Graham. I have used Longstone Tyres for many years. However, with a YB you might try Blockley Tyres. Who are an excellent firm their owner is a really good guy and I met him at the NEC earlier this year.
Blockley Tyres website is www.blockleytyres.com and phone number 01386 701717. They are based near Moreton-in- Marsh, Gloucestershire. Some distance from you but so are Vintage Tyres who are located in Hampshire.

Of course with a YB and the smaller wheel size you can fit radials. You may have a problem fitting them through into the space beneath the boot for the spare tyre. Howver, I believe the YB's have allowed for this - someone will no doubt advise.

Anyhow give all of them a phone and have a chat with them. The owner from Blockley Tyres really knows his stuff but they dont supply 5.25 x 16 tyres(for YA's or YT's). I think we met Mt (Ken) Buckley on the MG Octagon Stand at the Classic Car Show last month. We chatted about body colour from recollection - back to the original or the same white finish?

Have fun
All the best

Jerry,

My radials on the YB do fit in the spare wheel compartment if it helps.

If you want to preserve the authentic and original look and feel of 0251 (and why shouldn't you?)use cross ply tyres. I use Camac 5.60 x 15 tyres, which went out of production for a few years, but are now available again through one or two good suppliers, such as those already mentioned here on this thread.
I would also suggest that you fit heavy duty inner tubes with them, a bit more expensive but far better than the cheap stuff that comes in from far afield!
Hope this helps.

YB 0251-Does this early car have 16" wheels and the YA type rear axle?
S.R. Barrow

Hi its Keith Buckley. Thank you all for your comments on replacing the existing tyres they are currently cross ply. Just to clarify 0251 has got the 15 inch wheels.

Having now removed all the wings it is now clear that the original colour was silver streak grey with red piping between wings and the body. The original interior was red currently painted brown so I am going to put it back to the original colours as best I can.

I am still looking for an interior light. Many thanks

When I got my YB about 6 years ago, it had a motly selection of 5.90x15 cross plys! I had to replace 2 quickly and managed to get some NOS 5.90s on Ebay; 5.60s were unavailable.

When I needed to replace the other 2, Camac 5.60x15 were available and I bought 2, fitting them to the front wheels, with the 5.90s on the rear.

Despite having the front wheel alignment checked, the Camacs wore unevenly and had poor grip in wet conditions. They were (are), after all, budget tyres.

Earlier this year, I decided to sort the tyre problem out once and for all. I bought a set of 4 new Firestone 5.60x15 from Vintage Tyres and had them fitted locally. The Firestones are almost twice the price of the Camacs, but they have transformed the handling of the car. They are also of historic profile and so enhance the appearance of the car. I guess that you get what you pay for.

I kept the best of the Camacs as the spare. One of the rear tyres was badly cracked on the sidewalls, so I dumped it. I got a few pounds for the other 5.90 and the Camac on Ebay.

Keith. Looked for the interior light, I know I have one, but could not find it. Best bet is Paul. He is a good guy. Larry

Thank you all for your help and comments it looks like I am going for the Firestone tyres. I only want to restore it once.
Many thanks
