MG MG Y Type - YB windscreen washers
This may seem a daft question but can anyone confirm whether a 1953 YB was fitted with windscreen washers? I ask because mine is but I suspect that they are not original. They are manual rather than electric with the push knob fitted in the dead centre of the dash. It is so neatly fitted as to even suggest that it is original but I doubt it is. I have searched but can find no picture of a dash which is specifically from a YB to confirm this. as i have the dash out for re veneering I am contemplating filling the hole but would not do this if i were obliterating an original point. can anyone confirm my thinking or not.

https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/pdf/mge07201501.pdf Look at the YB dash in the article, my look same and presume this is what you mean, the windscreen winder is in middle, the nearside and offside bakerlite knobs are turned by hand to engage gear and then it runs like clockwork and wipers clean the screen as good as modern, well sort of tongue in cheek. thanks for the replies both of which are useful but don't really answer my question. I am interested in whether the YB was ever fitted with windscreen washers. certainly the car referred to in the EMG article shows no such fitment, having a bare centre dash where mine has a mechanical washer pump, but it is of a YA. did the YA and YB have the same dash layout? As i said thus may be a daft question but I would like to get it right. Ian Thomson |

Ian None of the Ys (Y, Y/T. or YB) were fitted with screen washers as standard by the factory. The Lucas ScreenJet was a popular after market fit option for many though and may even have been fitted by some dealers such as UMG (University Motor Group, Middlesex) to help sell the cars though. Paul |

thanks Paul. That's what I thought. Ian |

ian, When my father bought UMG624 in 1961 it had Trico Vacuum operated washers fitted. There was a take off point on the inlet manifold and a very small chromed button just below the dashboard to operate. wether this was fitted by U/Motors in 52 or by one of the two owners before he got it 61 i don't know John Y0362 |
