MG MG Y Type - Y's not recognised in the Classic Car press

I guess that some of you read Classic Car Weekly and Classic Cars for Sale. Did you see the supplements on MG's in yesterdays CCW and the June issue of CCFS?

Funny no direct reference to the Y type whatso ever, which is a pretty poor showing. I contacted CCFS earlier in the week but have received no response. I wrote to Dave Richards the Editor of CCW today so a bit early for a reply.

I commented that I was surprised that in each supplement coverge of Y's was non existent in what otherwise were quite good articles.

Perhaps Y owners might write to the Editors of these august publications to raise a voice of protest. Where are we now- one must ask - back to the late 60's and 70's when the model was unloved (by some),unknown (to many) and an unwritten part of MG history - even the factory records were destroyed!

Thankfully John Lawson, Dennis Doubtfire and others helped to significantly raise their profile. People who own and use them are often waylaid by folks who remember the model and point out that they know someone who used to have one.

So come on guys remind the motoring press of their existence and significance! Lets trust that we can shock them into including a decent article about Y's in the near future!

Sincerely

Hi Jerry

It is really a shame that folks neglect the Y ... but then again, we wouldn't want everyone wanting the best MG would we?

Still, even if Classic Car Weekly havent heard of the Y (and they have because Clive Ervill's car was in there recently) Hagerty Insurance sure have - http://www.hagerty.com/lifestyle/hobby_article.aspx?id=66724.

A brief follow up to my posting 'Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells' - no it didn't say that, but those who understand English humour wil get the drift!

I had some luck with Dave Richards, the editor of CCW.
He apologised for the absence and suggested that he would like to review a Y for a forthcoming edition of the paper.

After consultation with the MGCC Y Type Register the idea was put forward to contact Chris Seaward, the PR and Website Editor for MGCC. The outcome is that Dave will be driving 'Little Gem' - the YB that was left to the Club by the late Tim Penicott - and undertaking a review of the car. Dave will be doing a review of the YT later in the summer.

So something occasionally does emerge when our cars overlooked!

Sincerely

David Pelham - your PR Officer will be able to assist Dave Richards with suitable content for that too Jerry, and I am sure he and Neil will together come up with an unrivaled article so thank you very much for your follow through on this.

Sometimes not being on the first go around on an article pays dividends in that we get a better, exclusive press the second time around!

Great news and I look forward to seeing the article.

Classic Car Weekly did a comprehensive article on buying a Y Type on 9 October 2008, including a photograph of UMG 104. I was looking for a Y Type at the time and made a weekly trip to my local library (aka W H Smith!) to check through the cars for sale. On finding the article, I actually bought the paper that week and kept the article. If anyone is interested, I will try to scan it, but it would have to be in two halves as it is too big for my scanner.

Hi Mike

Thanks for the offer - the entire article is available on Reprinted Articles on www.mgytypes.org though to save you the hassle.
