MG MG Y Type - YT DOORS
YT Door shims. The old shims are a little rough and not the best of condition, some where in the door side and others on the body side of the hinge.Any correct side or is this normal?I am thinking of making them out of brass sheeting?Any suggestions. These old girls are an eye opener to the progress of the motor industry..... |

Hi Bob, You were also asking about the inner frame bracing to the YT doors. As you can see in the attached photos there is a metal strip that acts as the tension brace. I have a spare strip that I can measure up for you if need that level of detail. Cheers Tony ![]() ![]() |

Bob, instead of metal strip across door, you can also go with turn buckles so the front bottom corner of the door can be adjusted inwards or outwards to match quarter panel. Tightening the turn buckles brought the bottom edges of my doors in 10 mm, so they line up with the body panels. I have the metal strips I took off the doors, if you want them. cheers Stuart ![]() |

Bob Even though, I also made up shims (from aluminum), I seem to have read - probably in the workshop manual - that the factory used wooden blocks between the doors and the body and applied preasure to bend/adjust the hinges. Anton |

Hi Gents,I got two frame kits from NTG and fitted them in both doors,Ebay was the supplier of the copper shims for the hinges and I put a turn buckle to tension the bottom corner.Worked well.On setting the front gaps I am interested to see the line on other cars to get a measurement of the gap needed also the gap along the hinge end of the door.Thank for every ones input BOB WOOD,,,STAY SAFE |

Bob Wood - what is the NTG part number for the wood frames please? Paul |
Paul Barrow |
HI Paul The NTG kit give you the vertical post to mount the hinges on and the bottom rail to about about the position that the steel braces fits on the front corner. That corner is different on both my doors and Tony,s old doors. I joined them with a peace of 25 x 5 mm flat bar bent to shape and screwed on.The top rail had a bit of rot at the hinge end so have treated it and put a flat bar brace under it and tied it to the hinge post with the MIG welder. It is dark now so I will post a photo tomorrow. Part number is T517YL and T517YRin the body section of there web site...THANKS FOR YOUR EFFORTS ON THE WEB SITE... Bob Wood |

Hi Bob Thanks for the part numbers. I was able to get these two links - http://mgbits.com/contents/en-uk/search.php?searchphrase=t517yl&start_page=1&searchFormSortBy=R-A&searchFormRootUse=A and http://mgbits.com/contents/en-uk/search.php?searchphrase=t517yr&start_page=1&searchFormSortBy=R-A&searchFormRootUse=A. Will investigate if this is going to be a better fix for my doors too. Paul |

Hi This is the after picture of the rotten door hinge timber, note the captive hinge nuts, diagonal brace and the corner bracket. The other corners got the same bracing treatment so she is solid as a rock.
